I guess they didn't want any backlash for being too irreverent or disrespectful? You know what twitter is like.

AYRT--I sincerely doubt the changes had anything to do with twitter or social media, especially since the film is an adaptation of a musical adaptation of the original stage play. Previous adaptations, and the film, have removed the scene where Roxanne sneaks a carriage full of food over enemy lines and is actually there when her husband dies because it "breaks the tone" and "seems unrealistic" and I'm like "you seem to have missed the whole melodrama thing." And once they added people bursting into song it's like "tell me more about how you wanted everything to feel realistic."

Also scrapped: the bit where Cyrano needles the guy who gives them their marching orders for dropping the sash that singled him out as the commanding officer, so he could sneak away during a battle.

Cyrano says he would've kept his badge of office, commander dude says he didn't want to die, thanks, Cyrano says fine, give me the sash and I'll wear it.

Commander says don't be stupid, if I'd gone back to fetch it I'd have been shot. Which is when Cyrano is like "oh you mean this?" And holds up the sash.

The stuff that was removed wasn't disrespectful; it's not like Dinklage's wife had to remove a bunch of fart jokes or something. Not all comic relief is aimed at 9 year old boys.
