A good OT3 is exponentially harder to pull off than a OTP. If you're writing an OTP, you have 2 characters to get right, and the dynamic between them. If you're writing an OT3, you have 3 characters to get right, you have the AB dynamic, the AC dynamic, the BC dynamic, *and* the ABC dynamic. Much more opportunity for people to screw something up.
