All shipping for me is character driven and I’ve only been in one fandom with a plausible OT3. It was fun but the loudest shippers were very smug about how supine their ship was because it shipped the star with both of the main shipwar characters. None of those shippers could write worth a damn, either :( Some good fic did come out of other authors in the community, but none of that ever made it over to AO3 once that came around everyone started leaving LJ.
