Same. Discovery is in no way or sense belongs to ST. It doesn't feel like ST at all.

It is a reboot of Andromeda. Of which it does an adequate job, just by virtue of not having Kevin "pile of human excrement" Sorbo in it. As a Trek show, I'd rather watch an Enterprise Season One marathon. And I wouldn't even be skipping the opening titles.

Hang on (I've never seen Andromeda so I looked up a synopsis) - do you mean that Disco season 3 and 4 are reboots of Andromeda?

Or am I misunderstanding something.

(Not trying to sound picky - just looking for context.)

As an Andromeda fan, it doesn't feel like Andromeda either.

In what specific way does it not feel like Star Trek?

(Anonymous) 2022-05-19 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, personally I felt this much more about the first 3 seasons of Enterprise, because Discovery definitely feels like Star Trek.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-19 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly I just wish people would be more specific about what they mean when they say stuff "doesn't feel like Star Trek" across the board, because there are all kinds of things that "feel like Star Trek" and one person's definition might not match another person's. I mean, to me, First Contact doesn't feel like Star Trek, but clearly 99% of Star Trek fans disagree with me about that, which is fair.

And then sometimes people seem to just use it as an empty meaningless platitude for why they don't like a show.

As a fan of Discovery I wish people would be more specific, so I can argue them out of it. It is hard to browbeat them if they are just making general statements, you gotta get them to be specific and then nitpick them into silence.

we get it

you obsessively hate Discovery

(Anonymous) 2022-05-19 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
anon that the question above is directed at.
mte. I especially dislike when it's feelings and subjective opinions that are disregarded.

Not everybody is out to get you

(Anonymous) 2022-05-19 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That is just what they say to get you to drop your guard before they do get ya.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-19 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s a non-sequitur, considering they never said or implied everyone was out to get them, just that they dislike when feelings and subjective opinions are disregarded. And when you simply say that something doesn’t feel like Start Trek, which is obviously a subjective opinion, and someone who likes it demands you explain why you feel that way, it’s justified to dislike behavior like that. Just like Discovery, don’t get pressed at people who don’t and are stating their opinions about it, not everyone has to like the same things. It always seems that people who act like this whenever someone doesn’t like the thing they like, that they can’t stand hearing what they don’t want to hear. And if that’s not true, then maybe leave the people that don’t like it alone?

The original question was "In what specific ways does it not feel like Star Trek?" Assuming that the question can only be a stalking horse meant to allow someone to browbeat you and bully you into silence is assuming that everyone is out to get you.

If you just want to say "Subjectively, I dislike it," that's fine! I mean, I would still be interested in hearing about the subjective reasons you dislike it. But that's also a different statement from "I subjectively do not think it feels like Star Trek" - the definition of "Star Trek" is subjective and open to interpretation, but it's also based on very specific and tangible. If you want to say "I don't think it feels like Star Trek" I think it's legitimate to ask what Star Trek means to you. And it's not like Discovery in any way unique in terms of some people thinking that it doesn't feel like Star Trek.
