I STG, if I see one more GFM for "my 18-year-old cat has cancer and I want to get surgery for them!" I'm going to go fucking nuclear.

FOR FUCK'S SAKE. The animal is SUFFERING. The surgery is not going to make it stop suffering! All you are doing is putting it through something painful and traumatic for something that will give it a few more months at most, and at its age it isn't going to recover well in the first place! Stop being a selfish asshole and let the pet go peacefully instead of inflicting trauma on it just because YOU aren't willing to say goodbye.

I say this as someone who had to put my 16-year-old cat down last year because he had cancer and even having the surgery done (which I could easily afford) wouldn't have done more than given him a few more months. I couldn't justify putting him through that when he wouldn't even understand WHY any of it was happening. He was in pain and he didn't understand why he was in pain, and forcing him to go through surgery with the lengthy recovery time (where he would have been in even MORE pain) just so that I could have a few more months with him would have been cruel.

Agree so much.

I had to put down an elderly dog; the surgery for his cysts would have MAYBE given him a few more likely very uncomfortable months.

Having read some nursing and medicine forums though, people do this with their older relatives, too. If I'm 80+ and suffering dementia, don't put me through life-prolonging surgery because you'll selfishly miss me or feel guilty, relatives! I beg of you.

You're absolutely right, it'll only give an animal a few more months at most with no guarantee of comfort. I was angry with a family member (to whom I haven't spoken for years for other reasons, but for this shit too) for doing the BIG show of dropping one grand on surgery for a nearly 20-year-old cat. Of course, their reasons were more shitty and not simply missing the animal, but I still wouldn't agree even if their reasons had been better.

Yeah, it's one thing if it's a young animal and there's a chance it won't reoccur once it's treated. But even if it's not for cancer, idg taking heroic measures to keep an elderly pet alive in a way that's going to cause more pain. As pain free and mobile and able to eat and enjoy life as much as they can, sure, but since you can't explain to an animal so it understands, surgery and chemo are just torture.

Exactly, it's another story entirely if there's a good chance they'll have a number of happy, healthy years after treatment. But when the animal is already elderly and wouldn't have much time left even without the illness, putting it through all sorts of things that are going to make it miserable isn't being kind, it's torturing it, like you said. Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for a pet is letting it go with peace and dignity and more people need to recognize this.

As a lifetime cat owner i wholeheartedly agree.
Even before your animal gets sick - take it to the vet. Vaccinations, deworming, flea treatments, maybe dentals. Expect that expense, it's definitely worth it.
Dont let that poor thing suffer, have good talks with the vet about the QoL for the pet.
My vet once told me when my cat wasn't able to eat: We could put her under and have a look what obstructs her throat. BUT (and i was very grateful for that next sentence) we have no guarantee that a) she'll tolerate anaesthesia at her age and state and b) we can treat what we find.
So we decided to keep her comfy and let her pass peacefully when it's time.

Recently, i took my 12 year old cat to the vet for a dental - i was careful bc anaesthesia in an elderly cat. But vet said: your cats have been super healthy all these years, putting him under poses very little risk with high chance of some long, painfree years. (And it was worth it, hes so much more comfortable and snuggly ever since his rotten molars came out).

And when one day they are so sick with no good options, it's my job to do my best to keep them comfortable and to help them pass. My own selfishness should not be in the way and cause them pain.

I've been reading some really good fics lately, and I have to say it's leaving a sour taste in my mouth whenever I see a "liked the story? Leave a tip on...(cash app,Kofi, whatever)". Like damn. I know things are rough out here, but you just state you can do commissions if you're gonna ask for any $. It just bothers me (and not in the it's illegal way, just on principle, I guess. Like it's a hobby, and unless I'm asking you for something incredibly specific tailored to my liking, lol @ asking for money. It's a hobby. I don't owe you anything and you don't owe me anything). I did see someone have the audacity to put half their fic behind a paywall (LMAO, FOH).

Anyway, I've just been seeing it more lately. I've got half a mind to message them and ask if they do commissions. I'll gladly pay you like that. But just because I enjoyed the fic? Comments or kudos bb.

Related to the above comment in the disappointments thread...

...I really wish I was both healthier and taller so I could be a drag king. My stupid body just holds me back from everything I want to do and be in every possible way.
