I agree and I also find Kronk and Yzma a very nuanced balance to that message, because Kronk is out here causing c h a o s, but he's a sweetheart so no one cares.

eta: can we acknowledge that this is what the rainbow fish is trying to do too?

Sure, but it does it poorly. Rainbow fish isn’t really a dick and the other fish come off as pretty shallow in the end, so it comes off more “If people don’t like you, try bribing them.”

Rainbow fish is just as entitled as the people gassing him up, which is the funny thing. Old Golly's advice to Harriet is basically just as insincere (apologize and lie).

Why was the rainbow fish entitled? I mean, other than being entitled to his body parts.

entitled to praise. he never accepted community with the other fish even before the little fish asked for a scale, and then got upset when they refused to keep praising him like before. That's entitled. He doesn't need to give anyone anything, but they don't have to pay attention to him either.

I'm sorry, not wanting to literally rip parts of yourself off is entitled now?

And honestly, there's nothing wrong with being happy with/proud of your appearance, for that matter-- kids take in so much toxic messaging about how our bodies aren't good enough, how we need fixing, how there's 'good' and 'bad' hair... like, there SHOULD be protagonists who love how they look, especially when how they look is different from their peers.

i get that the body parts thing is what everyone focuses on, but he was quite literally ignoring everyone when they said hi and ask him to join them. When they stopped, that's when he got upset. He's not entitled to other people's well-regard.

eta: it's also very good for children to learn that if people only like them for their looks, and they never respond in kind, people are going to stop liking them. Liking a person's looks doesn't last past first anger.
