Disagree, even though I understand. I like the 90s series, and it definitely had more time to dedicate to different ways to show the girls and their friendships. But I really don’t like the constant squabbling compared to the more supportive friendships in the manga and Crystal, not to mention PGSM. The girls really did care for each other just as much in the 90s version, but it was still hard for me to watch the rather mean way Usagi especially was constantly treated until the more climactic parts of each season. In that way, I prefer Crystal as an adaptation.

Also, this is another thing where it’s obviously fine to disagree, but I remember a quote from Takeuchi saying something like how she thought the 90s series felt more like a male perspective on female friendships and relationships(which makes sense considering the predominantly male staff), while her original manga was from her perspective as a woman. I’d have to look up the actual quote to see exactly how she put it, but it was something like that. And while the “male perspective” of the 90s anime was still quite good in many ways, especially for it’s time, I think she puts into words why I still prefer the manga and it’s portrayals. Not just in it’s depictions of female friendships, but also it’s female coming of age narratives.

She and you can think that, but the legions of female viewers of all ages resonated just fine with that depiction of female friendships. Because they do be like that sometimes. Teenage girls aren't just nice and supportive and rainbows.

Which is why I said it’s fine to disagree with that? I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the 90s depiction on it’s own just because I prefer the manga. And I never said teenage girls were “just nice and supportive and rainbows.”? I would know better, because I was one. Things aren’t rainbows and sunshine for the girls in the manga either. A lack of Rei insulting Usagi constantly doesn’t equal a lack of personality and real friendships like I see so many people accuse it of. And I said that the girls do care about each other and have depth in the 90s version too, just that there’s a lot more squabbling in between that. I really love the 90s anime, even though I have my preferences in certain areas, so I don’t get the defensive reaction you gave.

And when I say it’s fine to disagree with that Takeuchi quote, I really mean it. Just because I agree with where she’s coming from in this regard doesn’t mean I’m saying that 1. I think the 90s version is sexist or anything like that, because I don’t, I still think it’s very empowering. Especially for it’s time. The thrashing Moon, Mercury and Mars give to Jadeite over him underestimating them based on his blatant sexism is still a moment I’ve always loved. Or 2. That Takeuchi is some objective voice everyone should automatically listen to just because she’s the author. That ignores death of the author, which I’m in favor of. And she’s also said and done questionable things before that I would never dream of defending.

(ie. saying she gave Setsuna dark skin because she wanted her to “have a dark personality”, that’s the biggie in my opinion in terms of yikes. Or her basically just tracing real designer dresses to make Princess Serenity’s dress as well as some others. I don’t think that’s a crime or anything, but it’s iffy and definitely not creative artistically. Taking inspiration from real designs is different from just drawing the real design wholesale. Idk)

... okay, that's actually kind of hilarious to hear to me because I was about Usagi's age when I watched the 90s series for the first time and all I could think at the time was "wow, this is just like me and my friends!" Meanwhile I read the manga and it just didn't resonate with me at all, it felt far too perfect and idealized.
