I didn't like Brotherhood. I got through a couple of eps and just noped on out - the best way I can put it is that it was like a cover version of a song where the singer puts the stresses on weird words so they can do showoffy things with their voice and it just sounds wrong and you miss every beat.

I used to agree when Brotherhood first came out.

Then I tried watching both two years ago and I really enjoyed Brotherhood but couldn't get through the 2003 anime. So I guess my taste changed?

I still ship RoyEd though. Which I get that I should feel bad about, but I can't bring myself to feel guilty because I used to be about Edward's age when I shipped them back then so it still feel perfectly alright to me.

I couldn’t get into either anime after the manga. The first one bothered me because the manga has incredibly consistent and logical worldbuilding, and the first one has solid worldbuilding when and only when it uses manga elements. The second one just bored me because I already knew this story.

I only watched a few episodes of Brotherhood, and the pacing bothered me; as a massive fan on the manga, however, it felt like it wasn't inherently a pacing issue with the source material but the fact that Brotherhood and the 2003 anime have the same beginning. The beginning of Brotherhood was notably rushed, which doesn't surprise me if a lot of folks go in knowing the 2003 anime. 2003 didn't really split off fully plot-wise until...around Greed's intro? If I'm remembering right.

With all that said, I found 2003 to be dull and forgettable. A bit harsh, but I honestly couldn't tell you any details other than what plot points and characters are shared in both 2003/the manga.

I'm not a huge fan of either, but I used to be a fan of the first anime and never could get into the manga/Brotherhood at all. I remember the feeling of "What am I missing?" when other people said Brotherhood obviously had better writing and characters.

I never did watch Brotherhood because I tried reading the manga and I just couldn't with the tonal difference to 03. The thing that made me love the first anime so fiercely just wasn't there. I obviously can't comment on the purely objective qualities of Brotherhood, but I've known of other people pointing out that the core of the story is just completely different.

I just couldn't get past the speedrun through the arcs the 2003 anime already covered. I meant to pick it back up when it hit the divergence point but never did and as much as I enjoy the 2003 anime I just couldn't get myself to trudge back through Brotherhood.

Honestly this also left me with a deep dislike of anime reboots that speed through the early material in general, I would rather sit through stuff I've already seen like Fruits Basket did than be bored stiff through the opening episodes of shows like Brotherhood or the recent Shaman King. Early material is *important* for building tone and character, and speeding through it to me makes the whole series almost fatally unbalanced.

I feel like a lot of the affection for 2003 has to be from nostalgia because.... Oh boy it gets real bad. Remember the entire thing with Archer? The guy who raped Rose and then became a cyborg? And then it ended in Nazi Germany and the travesty of Conquerer of Shamballah. And I say this as a longterm diehard fan.

Yes, Brotherhood has weird pacing issues in the beginning, but the story actually stays coherent and comes back around in a way that makes sense for everyone involved. Yes, it lacks the 2003 Wrath plot, which is fantastic (but 2003 had a shitty ending for him too) but we gain a lot more.

God, Lao Yang is the *worst*. (The good news is, he's unique to the god-tree arc and doesn't reappear later.)

Morning routines with pets

For any fellow pet-guardians. What are the morning routines you have with your animals?


My Joanna insists on climbing up on my lap as soon as I wake up and getting at least 10 minutes of pets. Then we go to the kitchen, I start coffee and then get her breakfast. And then she goes out on the porch while I head out to start my work day.
