Australia used to come up with some really good young adult SFF shows, what happened down there that it stopped?

yep, the time traveling/dimension hopping teen tv shows were great.

A lot of them were from the ABC, the government broadcaster, and for rightwing political reasons their funding was cut and cut and cut - kids' animation is cheaper, e.g. Bluey. Local content rules were also weakened (same reason plus Murdoch press shenanigans) so it became less economic for commercial channels to produce these shows. We now have a new centre-left government so we'll see if it picks up again.

Money. Being 'kids shows' programs like these never attracted enough viewers for the network to get their money's worth from advertisers. Children's programming is always the first thing our networks pull funding from, which is a real shame because as you say there was a time when so many quality shows were available.

The Girl From Tomorrow was on Channel 9 and Ocean Girl/H2O/etc were on Channel 10.

My personal favourites were Round The Twist (first 2 seasons only) and Spellbinder (1st season is absolutely perfect) both on the ABC.
