A lot of scenes in a lot of stuff are just way too dark and I don't think "theater experience" would make it better. For a short while to create suspense and mystery during a scene where there's lots of tension and we're right there with the character not being able to see well? Maybe. But it's unnecessary and looks bad!

I agree with the second half of this but not the first. Modern cinema is not much different from watching at home now and plenty of times in the last five years I’ve sat in the cinema while we all stared at what may as well have been a blank screen because it was too dark and often it’s combined with hyper fast action slices. I honestly can’t see the point of going to the cinema anymore. There is so little difference between film and television crafting anymore and both have suffered for it.

I agree that lighting on TV these days is very bad, especially lighting on Disney shows.

It's because cocaine is coming back. The people working on these movies and shows literally don't realize how dark it is.

Yes! So much yes. I don't mind an occasional, well-chosen dark scene. But when everything is super dark just for the sake of it, it gets really annoying and really old really fast.

There's multiple things behind this. The screens they're using when editing are probably both better quality, and actually calibrated. Most home televisions are still using out-of-the-box settings that are pretty bad and may even be applying digital effects like motion smoothing. Even projectors at a movie theatre are probably not being calibrated and maintained properly.

Recording digitally vs on film is also a problem - film generally requires a lot of lighting, digital doesn't *but* it is usually flatter and more desaturated, so even a bright frame will seem darker. Darkness can also cover sins like bad effects (cgi or practical), mass use of green screen and bad lighting in general.

But also, I think it's a trend among directors and cinematographers. There's this idea that dark is more "real", and I think many use darkness without really understanding how to use it. It is really easy nowadays to mess about with this stuff in post, and it isn't even necessarily directors/editors pushing it everytime, sometimes the network/studio will demand a certain look regardless of what was shot for.

GoT was a watershed moment. Being able to see the final battle might not have saved the season but realizing it couldn't be seen definitely hurt it.

I kind of appreciate it when it's done as a budget saver but I can't stand it when it's seemingly done on accident.

To me it's another facet of this weird place we"re at ATM. All the focus is on the cool shit technology can do and there's zero interest in the common sense side of things - in this case, can this scene be watched in the conditions under which most people will be watching them?

You see this gap everywhere ATM.

I was skeptical about how Sam just showed up and started doing shit. I mean, he was strictly a city kid and he'd read some books about foraging and stuff, but that does NOT adequately prepare you for suddenly having to feed, shelter and clothe yourself in the wild. Sure he had a few missteps, but for the most part everything worked out fine for him. I think in reality he'd have had to forage a LOT more greens and roots, the book focused on meat a lot.

I'm not 100% sold on the cultivator genre. I don't mind some of it, but prefer a bit more fantasy/wuxia leaning with less focus on the cultivation. But I've been looking for more Asian fantasy in general (without having to deal with fan translations of Chinese novels) and haven't loved anything I've read so far. I'll check out Sean Russell, though!

I haven't been that into films for a while now. Hearing that even Sundance is starting to lose its luster with some fans really is making me feel like cinema as it was is no more and we need to start searching for what cinema will become. Because what it is now isn't very fun or good or investing or interesting.

Or just the age rating, and whatever the art department put on the poster or video cover. Sometimes, if you got lucky, you'd catch Mary Whitehouse ranting about it on tv and get an idea if it was giving her a fit of the vapours because of sex, violence, or both. Mary Whitehouse publicised so many movies for me when I was a kid.
