I pirated the last season of GOT because I was abroad and poor back then, so I thought I downloaded a very bad copy of the episode and shrugged going all "OK, I didn't pay for this. It's my fault. I'm just going to use my imagination LOL". Then I discovered that the episode was in the same quality and lighting as everyone else and got so confused. Why did they think that's be a good choice???
What a shame.

Directors watch the edit in precisely calibrated production theaters, with the theater lighting completely pitch black, but also the display equipment tweaked to nth degree and the image in the highest resolution possible. Unfortunately what looks good to them under completely perfect conditions personalized to the specific editing and directing team does not translate into real world conditions for the rest of us.

Makes total sense! Editing is very important. It's kind of sad that people worked hard on that episode and the viewers couldn't see almost anything. Storywise the episode was kind of stupid, but I bet it would've been a lot better and enjoyable with proper lighting.

It’s amazing how wrong they got absolutely everything in that episode. The long night wasn’t just a night, it’s where the sun doesn’t rise for months or years. The little bit we saw was people definitely dying only to somehow not die. It was a complete shambles.
