Or just the age rating, and whatever the art department put on the poster or video cover. Sometimes, if you got lucky, you'd catch Mary Whitehouse ranting about it on tv and get an idea if it was giving her a fit of the vapours because of sex, violence, or both. Mary Whitehouse publicised so many movies for me when I was a kid.

TBH same. I'm more and more for blanket warnings. If you're someone who needs specific warnings you should rely on friends/family to fill you in or stuff like Does the Dog Die? but I think people have gotten way too neurotic about it to the point some people will warn for stuff that's not even in the fuckin' thing. I think at that point people need to take a step back. Content warnings are all well and good if they're accurate but 1. a lot of them aren't anymore and 2. creator(s) are really starting to feel way too responsible for the comfort of other people and I don't think that's supposed to be their job.

A lot of scenes in a lot of stuff are just way too dark and I don't think "theater experience" would make it better. For a short while to create suspense and mystery during a scene where there's lots of tension and we're right there with the character not being able to see well? Maybe. But it's unnecessary and looks bad!

I agree with the second half of this but not the first. Modern cinema is not much different from watching at home now and plenty of times in the last five years I’ve sat in the cinema while we all stared at what may as well have been a blank screen because it was too dark and often it’s combined with hyper fast action slices. I honestly can’t see the point of going to the cinema anymore. There is so little difference between film and television crafting anymore and both have suffered for it.

Lighting stuff for the cinema is not "snobbish".

I agree that lighting on TV these days is very bad, especially lighting on Disney shows.

I was skeptical about how Sam just showed up and started doing shit. I mean, he was strictly a city kid and he'd read some books about foraging and stuff, but that does NOT adequately prepare you for suddenly having to feed, shelter and clothe yourself in the wild. Sure he had a few missteps, but for the most part everything worked out fine for him. I think in reality he'd have had to forage a LOT more greens and roots, the book focused on meat a lot.

I'm not 100% sold on the cultivator genre. I don't mind some of it, but prefer a bit more fantasy/wuxia leaning with less focus on the cultivation. But I've been looking for more Asian fantasy in general (without having to deal with fan translations of Chinese novels) and haven't loved anything I've read so far. I'll check out Sean Russell, though!

I pirated the last season of GOT because I was abroad and poor back then, so I thought I downloaded a very bad copy of the episode and shrugged going all "OK, I didn't pay for this. It's my fault. I'm just going to use my imagination LOL". Then I discovered that the episode was in the same quality and lighting as everyone else and got so confused. Why did they think that's be a good choice???
What a shame.
