I felt the same way when I first read this book (roughly 43 years ago). Its remained a favorite of mine as well (along with Island Of the Blue Dolphins), but yeah, it does require A LOT of suspension of disbelief.

I loved Island of the Blue Dolphins (except for the ending), and Julie of the Wolves. So very cool! I really rooted for those girls, and wanted to do that same kind of thing. Not that i had a chance, heh, I'd have died, but at least those characters had a believable reason for being able to survive.

Island of the Blue Dolphins was so sad. Just looked it up and apparently it was based on a real woman and the author wrote a seqeul.

Yup, her entire community left their native island, with help from the US Navy, and since her brother was away from the shore, back at the village, he was left behind. She refused to leave him, the ship refused to go back for him, so she jumped overboard and went back.

{The reasoning behind leaving was all but 15 of the males of the community had been killed in a fight over otter hunting, and they didn't think the remaining members, mostly women and children, would be able survive on their own, with resources dwindling, and since the men had been the primary hunters. So they decided to leave.}

When they came back for her, years later- *18 years later*, she survived a handful of years on the mainland, she wasn't able to adapt easily by that point, and was an elder as well, so that made it harder for her.

Her true name was lost, but she was baptized Juana Marie. The island was San Nicolas.
