Indeed. Weird thing is, we're not the first in our area. A couple months ago the news reported the same thing happening to another large CC a town over. And everyone on our staff went "....uuhhhhhh... That is weird and definitely not good." We were on our guard after that, just apparently not enough so. (Or maybe the fact that we have been able to mostly recover and get online classes, critical infrastructure, etc. restored with less than a week of actual downtime means we were better prepared than it would appear to an outsider (or someone like me whose primary job focus is design/dev rather than networking/systems).)

And I don't know how widespread this sort of thing is, because our org has been keeping the details quiet other than "we were targeted by a cyberattack" - the local news is the one who outed it as ransomware in this case, and possibly in the other CC's case. For all I know it's happening all over the place in recent months, and in other places it just hasn't been leaked to the press.
