On the other hand, you have fans who think that if they don't like something, it is okay to be racist/sexist/homophobic/whatever towards the creators/actors of the thing they don't like. And then when they are called out on it, they claim they weren't being racist/etc. they just don't like the thing. No, you were being racist. There isn't anything wrong with not liking something. There is something wrong with being racist. Those are different things.

And there are also people who are very quick to accuse other people of being racist when those people say they don't like something, as well.

The actress is being bombarded with hate. That's racism. There is no reason to send hate to an actress even if you think she's bad at her job. And the fact that the three Star Wars actors who have gotten the most hate mail have been black is not a coincidence.

I think you're in the wrong thread.

I agree that sending hate to actors is absolutely not cool, and yes, the hate that Moses Ingram is getting is indeed racist bullshit.

At the same time, people should still be able to say they don't like Reva if that's how they feel. Disliking a character is not the same as sending racist hate to an actor in the real world, or hating on that actor. I've also seen plenty of people be accused of racism for not liking particular characters or shipping the wrong pairings, when they weren't saying or doing anything racist.

This doesn't invalidate the opinions of those who genuinely dislike Kenobi. These are two entirely two different matters and stop conflating the two.

Ahh, this was a huge thing when I was a kid. (and now, tbh) Like especially when it can to certain fandoms. Like in the early(? idk, I left it decades ago) Naruto fandom disliking Sakura mean you simultaneously hated women, and only disliked her because you were a disgusting SasuNaru yaoi fan.
Similar things, but I hear even more intensely, happen with Inuyasha- (looking at you SesshoRin) which even as a kid I knew to stay wayy clear of..(as a random Kikyou fan who disliked Kagome, I am soo glad I did, lol)

A fellow random Kikyou fan! I didn’t know that there was multiple of us anymore!

The worst part about this I find, is that there are so /many/ people who genuinely believe they're not in the wrong, and are genuinely aghast at the idea they are being accused of it. A lot of the time I think people are just desperately backtracking with their denials because they just don't want to /acknowledge/ that they were actually being bigoted.
The 'why' technically doesn't matter either which way, but I do tend to stupidly hope that the ones who are denying for denials sake are more likely take a second look at being called out as being bigoted and learn the errors of their ways...?? (idk actually, I was just getting depressed thinking about it lol;;)

Agreed.

Are you a mind reader?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s almost like there’s precedent that AYRT’s going on or something.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
DA It's almost like generalizing about a large group of people who don't like something based on the behavior of only some people in that group is going to piss the rest off when you assume you know what their true reasons are!

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Except they said “so many people” and not “everyone”. That’s not generalizing. You can make the argument it’s exaggerating, sure. But not generalizing.
