IME, this is depressingly common over on Reddit. Except that the person trashing the thing probably does think you're trash for liking it. r/movies and r/television have too many users who think that liking (and hating) the right movies or television is a mark of intelligence.

I would love more opportunities to discuss why people don't like things without bashing the people who do like those things.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, you have fans who think that if they don't like something, it is okay to be racist/sexist/homophobic/whatever towards the creators/actors of the thing they don't like. And then when they are called out on it, they claim they weren't being racist/etc. they just don't like the thing. No, you were being racist. There isn't anything wrong with not liking something. There is something wrong with being racist. Those are different things.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
And there are also people who are very quick to accuse other people of being racist when those people say they don't like something, as well.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The actress is being bombarded with hate. That's racism. There is no reason to send hate to an actress even if you think she's bad at her job. And the fact that the three Star Wars actors who have gotten the most hate mail have been black is not a coincidence.

DA

da

Ahh, this was a huge thing when I was a kid. (and now, tbh) Like especially when it can to certain fandoms. Like in the early(? idk, I left it decades ago) Naruto fandom disliking Sakura mean you simultaneously hated women, and only disliked her because you were a disgusting SasuNaru yaoi fan.
Similar things, but I hear even more intensely, happen with Inuyasha- (looking at you SesshoRin) which even as a kid I knew to stay wayy clear of..(as a random Kikyou fan who disliked Kagome, I am soo glad I did, lol)

The worst part about this I find, is that there are so /many/ people who genuinely believe they're not in the wrong, and are genuinely aghast at the idea they are being accused of it. A lot of the time I think people are just desperately backtracking with their denials because they just don't want to /acknowledge/ that they were actually being bigoted.
The 'why' technically doesn't matter either which way, but I do tend to stupidly hope that the ones who are denying for denials sake are more likely take a second look at being called out as being bigoted and learn the errors of their ways...?? (idk actually, I was just getting depressed thinking about it lol;;)

As a Rise of Skywalker fan, I feel this secret.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
As a The Last Jedi and prequel trilogy fan I also feel this secret.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
DA The Last Jedi is one of my favorite Star Wars movies, so I feel it, too.

this reminds me of how it used to be (? still is?) a faux pas on tumblr to "tag your hate", because clearly only fans would use a tag and they do NOT want to read about people not liking their shit.

the sentiment always rubbed me the wrong way. for one i enjoy taking the things i like apart and look at the ways in which they're flawed, it's part of the fun for me even. for another, sometimes i watch/read something that bugs me in some way and i like looking it up to see if others had the same issues i did. where am i going to find that if not in the tags?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That's where "X critical" and "anti X" tags come in handy, or at least they have for my salty bitch self.

YES, THIS. If I generally enjoyed something except for a certain thing, I like to go see if other people felt the same way or if it was really just me. It's always nice to find out that other people share your opinion on which parts of a canon just really didn't work for whatever reason. Validation, in other words.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Don't tag your hate" was supposed to be about actual hate, not critique of things you like. "I hate this, it's trash because [reasons why you think it's trash] and the writers can die in a fire, I don't understand the fucking idiots who like this garbage" is hate, even if there are valid points in the bracketed part. It's in the way it's said. No, I don't want to read valid critique from someone who HATES the thing I like and makes that clear; when I want to read it, I want to read it from other fans like me.

Yup. Some people are just way too sensitive about people not liking what they do, and I can sympathize with not wanting to hear or read about a thing you loved getting trashed but at least in an online environment you can 1) control if you see that and 2) have no right to stop other people from voicing their displeasure. There's also a huge difference between dislike and a 200 page rant about some piece of media, and I am completely fine with the former of something I like. And tbh I might even read the latter to see what didn't work for someone because I can find that interesting too.

As an example: my bff doesn't like the Lord of the Rings movies, they're my fave movies, somehow our friendship is able to persist because it's not actually a big deal. :P

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, 'I don't like RandomMediaThing', 'I don't care for RandomMediaThing', 'RandomMediaThing is not my thing', and the like are not attacks.

However, 'I don't get people that like RandomMediaThing', 'Why would anyone be a fan of RandomMediaThing?', 'Why do people like RandomMediaThing when OtherRandomMediaThing is so much better?' and the like are kind of attacks. I mean, it's not exactly the same as 'RandomMediaThing is awful and there is something wrong with people who like it', but it does feel like that's the implication.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-06 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding this!

When I was younger I was absolutely guilty of getting defensive and while I'm much better at stepping back now, I know for me it was usually the remarks like "RandomMedia is so stupid! RandomMedia is so ridiculous! Who is stupid enough to like this trash?" that sparked the defensiveness rather than 'I don't like RandomMedia for xyz reasons".

Especially when hearing it in person.

At least online one can scroll on to the next topic but in offline it's more awkward. I still clench whenever I mention something I like and immediately have to listen to someone go off about how much it 'sucks and is so stupid!' I know it's not about me but it still sucks to share what you like only to have it ridiculed.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
And not liking a thing doesn't mean you think it's trash! You're just not into it. You can not like a thing and feel completely neutral about other people's opinions on the thing.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! I just don't have the mental capacity to consume everything. I prioritize based upon what I personally like and am in the mood for. I don't think my tastes are better than anyone else's. It's perfectly OK not to have any strong opinions or emotions on everything. It's not a sign of judgement and I don't know how people misinterpret it to be so.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely! There are lots of things I've not liked that I didn't think were bad by any means, just that they didn't resonate with me and that's just gonna happen because not everything appeals to everyone.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly, there are plenty of things that I recognize are objectively good, they just aren't for me.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, plenty of people tend to think anything they personally don't like is objectively bad because their own opinion and taste is the be-all and end-all and at the same time, some people can't help saying "-thing- sucks" when what they really mean is "I don't like -thing-" so I can understand why some people get defensive about this.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. It's always been a thing, but I find (or just tend to notice) it happening much more frequently these days. I think it's how defensive people get about it is what really stands out to me. (or how far they'll go out of their way to interpret your simply comment as something personally distressing to them...)

I saw much more people yelling about how disliking a character made you sexist/homophobic/whatever (which was obviously annoying) but occasionally still willing to hear you out/ignore you- but now it's like most people simply cannot dissociate a character from them themselves (regardless of if it's a 3000y old magical ghost or, idk, a simple high school student), so any criticism towards the character immediately translates to criticizing them personally and nothing can convince them otherwise.
Both are/have always been around but it's /so/ much more common to find yourself subject to an unwanted therapy session and being ranted at for how cruel you are for not being more sympathetic because you pointed out that the character (who's a mass murderer) is, y'know, a mass murderer or something stupid like that...
