Yup. It's always been a thing, but I find (or just tend to notice) it happening much more frequently these days. I think it's how defensive people get about it is what really stands out to me. (or how far they'll go out of their way to interpret your simply comment as something personally distressing to them...)

I saw much more people yelling about how disliking a character made you sexist/homophobic/whatever (which was obviously annoying) but occasionally still willing to hear you out/ignore you- but now it's like most people simply cannot dissociate a character from them themselves (regardless of if it's a 3000y old magical ghost or, idk, a simple high school student), so any criticism towards the character immediately translates to criticizing them personally and nothing can convince them otherwise.
Both are/have always been around but it's /so/ much more common to find yourself subject to an unwanted therapy session and being ranted at for how cruel you are for not being more sympathetic because you pointed out that the character (who's a mass murderer) is, y'know, a mass murderer or something stupid like that...
