the problem with it being in private is that they're public people so what gets said impacts on how they interact with the public and how the public interacts with them

if there was a public backlash against depp because of something that was publicly said about him resulting in him losing work (whether you - general you - agree with that or not, that was the finding of the trial), that isn't going to be turned round by a private hearing - if he was cancelled in the public eye he needed to be uncancelled in the public eye as well

Another way of saying this is that Depp's goal was to convince the public that he (Depp) was an innocent victim and had done nothing wrong and that Heard was an evil bitch who had wronged him, and that this goal could only be accomplished with a public trial, and with a large publicity campaign more generally.

And that's true as far as it goes: a massive amount of publicity was necessary to achieve his goals. But that's only a compelling justification for his conduct if you think that his goal is legitimate, IE, if you think that he did nothing wrong and is totally innocent.

DA

The conclusion I've come to is that they're actually both horrible people, and the public deserves a break from having to pretend to care about either one of them.
