Thankfully it's finally over, but I'm with you that all of this should have been private from the beginning.

I wish they would too but unfortunately I doubt it, this is going to be dragged out publicly for years. :/

Well, I'm going say that it was public because a) the US justice system believes that public trials reduce corruption (and I think that's right for a base level of public, but I don't think historical figures could have predicted the fucking internet), b) Depp specifically asked that this last trial allow cameras (and yes, I do think he knew what would happen), c) true crime would NEVER have been able to resist being capitalistic about this, and d) the media in general would never have been able to resist being capitalistic about this.

That said, for a lot of reasons "why don't you two just settle" requires the people involved to value peace for non-parties more than I'm comfortable with in such a situation, especially as I think the media frenzy simply shouldn't be so easy to whip up, and that's an indictment on us all, imo.

All of this ^

i genuinely thought i had curated my online space well enough. i saw nothing about it on twitter, nothing on tumblr and the only times the algorithm tried to push it on me was youtube and for some reason twitch (a "watch party". the streamer had tagged it as anime.).

now that it's ended people i figured were fine to follow have started reblogging shit about it, it's depressing. i straight up saw a post by sarah z basically going "i 100% understand not wanting to keep up or having an opinion about it, but you really should form an opinion about this". i keep seing posts about how those that dismissed it were fools because of the ~broader implications~, as if obssessing over it did or will do anything.

suffice to say it has thoroughly disillusioned me from the idea that you can curate your online space enough to not have to see shit you absolutely do not want to see.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
you really should form an opinion about this

WHY though? Ugh. Like you said, it does nothing.

I get what you mean.

And I mean, politics has ~broader implications~ too, but I don’t think everyone should force themselves to have opinions on everything politic all the time if they don’t want to or if it would be detrimental to their mental health. Not literally everyone HAS to have an opinion on everything that COULD have a broader societal implications all the time. And politics probably isn’t even a good example honestly, because there are some actual arguments to be made about why caring about certain political topics is worthwhile and can make a difference(if you’re in the right headspace to where you feel you can participate, of course). Unlike this trial, where whatever broader implications possibly stemming from it are not enough reason for literally everybody to have an opinion if they genuinely don’t care to have one. Just let people live, Sarah!

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
the problem with it being in private is that they're public people so what gets said impacts on how they interact with the public and how the public interacts with them

if there was a public backlash against depp because of something that was publicly said about him resulting in him losing work (whether you - general you - agree with that or not, that was the finding of the trial), that isn't going to be turned round by a private hearing - if he was cancelled in the public eye he needed to be uncancelled in the public eye as well

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Another way of saying this is that Depp's goal was to convince the public that he (Depp) was an innocent victim and had done nothing wrong and that Heard was an evil bitch who had wronged him, and that this goal could only be accomplished with a public trial, and with a large publicity campaign more generally.

And that's true as far as it goes: a massive amount of publicity was necessary to achieve his goals. But that's only a compelling justification for his conduct if you think that his goal is legitimate, IE, if you think that he did nothing wrong and is totally innocent.

Same. I have reached levels of not-caring that I didn't even think were possible. It's weird to experience indifference so strong that it's almost kind of an active emotion instead of the lack of one.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
remember that depp wanted the trial public for a reason. to humiliate amber, and turn the public against her and destroy her career because she dared to speak up. i agree that it's exhausting, but this case, while not meant to be about the abuse, clearly was, and if a victim with clear receipts (photos, witnesses, texts, etc) is STILL not believed, then it just makes it that much harder for other victims to come forward in the future, and lets abusers know they can make their victims' lives hell if they attempt to say anything.

unrelated domestic violence in bottom of comment

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I fucking hate that Depp is becomign the face of Male Abuse Victim. I literally hate his face. Amber's receipts convinced me that whatever else was going on, he was doin' a violence to her, and sadly it fits with the other on-set stuff people say about his temper.

His face also looks like the face of a guy who did domestic violence who I used to know (he stuck to verbal/emotional abuse with me, only escalated to physical shit with later partners and victims) so I don't want to see it ever again. That makes another reason to not go see the latest jkr movies, ha ha ha fuckin' ha

My baby girl was forced to settle in a trial with a guy who tried to force her off her meds and choked her in bed and pursued her for sex when she didn't want any to the point where she had to hide under the bed so he couldn't reach her. It makes me so mad that the person with all the money gets to force an outcome in their favor so many times.

Didn't AH leak pictures of her alleged abuse to the tabloids? Seems like she was the one dragging it out into the public.

Or, it's because she continued to slander JD in the public sphere, so of course he'd want the rebuttal to be just as public. I mean, she leaked pictures of her alleged abuse to the tabloids. Nobody who wants to keep things private does that.

I tried pretty hard not to pay attention to it, but I notice that I can't even look at Depp anymore. I just think he is a fucking creep.

I am also salty about the impression some people have that Amber's editorial ruined his career. My dudes, do you not remember Mortdecai? He has been making terrible professional decisions for a good long time now.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Shocking that the guy pigeonholing himself in roles and spending tens of thousands on drugs and alcohol every month might be starting to lose some work at almost 60.

What gets me is this kind of gross implication that anyone who supports JD, including actual abuse victims, is some ninny who's been brainwashed by memes. My personal issues w AH are:
1. Telling him that nobody would believe or side with a male victim of abuse.
2. Lying *under oath* about something as easily checkable as whether she donated money. (And the Humpty Dumpty defense of donate and pledge meaning the same thing does not pass the sniff test)
3. Severe cases of physical assault that somehow left no noticable injuries and required no medial attention.
4. Telling JD she hit him but didn't didn't punch him and otherwise downplaying her physical abuse abuse, which sure sounds like gaslighting to me.

All of this is on video or tape, all from the horse's mouth. I didn't get my sour opinion of AH from memes, tyvm

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
This. JD isn't a perfect angel by any means, but this show made me loathe AH and I'm glad she got what was coming.

I'm pretty sure they'd wanted it to be settled in private too, (on some level at least) but being celebrities means that they aren't allowed a private life, let alone an even moderately safe place to actually deal with these/any traumatic event healthily whatsoever.
