I understand there’s some kind of class thing where British fans hate Ron for being poor. But I never understood why American fans hate Ron so much. He seems harmless enough.

I don't hate Ron, but I don't think he was this amazing friend. Goblet of Fire is what did it for me. He's supposed to know Harry so well and yet he somehow believes Harry would put his name in the Goblet. And the idea of Harry putting his name in the goblet makes him so angry he doesn't talk to his best friend for weeks.

There were a lot of other underlying resentments and both characters involved were 14 at the time

Many hate him because they only see or are overly influenced by the movies. It's one of the reasons I honestly hold a grudge against the movies for how they did Ron and Ginny so dirty.

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2022-06-06 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ginny should have been recast, but hey, I get it.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-06 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Still can't believe how many times they literally gave Ron's moments to Hermione in the movies. Like. Why.

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2022-06-06 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The hate usually comes from either Harry/Hermione shippers or some flavor of Sytherfan.

I generally assume that one large part of it is simply that they have a different favorite character whose relationship with Harry they want to inflate instead, and another large part of it is that Ron's good qualities are not things that a lot of the people in the fanbase are inclined to appreciate.

It's simple. He got in the way of Harmione.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-07 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I would guess that they hate him because he's a fairly normal kid - thus easy to identify with - and also flawed, in realistic ways.

Not the chosen one, not a saint, not super-cool, but easy to identify with: a mirror. And therefore his flaws become a reflection to the audience - This is what you are, too. We don't always like to see that.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-07 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ron may be the one who 8is supposed to be normal, but I always found Hermione way more relatable.

Speaking as a Brit - Ron very clearly isn't working class. And poor but upper class is generally something the British love.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-06 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. It never occurred to me that he might be a bad friend. Then again, I never got involved in HP fandom, so I never heard about this.

Also, I do remember that scene but holy god it's hilarious out of context.

Book Harry is such a smartass.

Meh.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-06 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think he was a terrible person, but I don't think he was a great friend. I don't think helping Harry into pajamas makes up for the jealousy, the resentment, the disbelief, the shunning, and the abandonment. They were children, then teenagers, yes, and there were mitigating circumstances for some of it, but that doesn't excuse all of it. I don't think Harry or Hermione were perfect friends to each or to Ron, but I think they were better.

DA

Personally, I think Harry and Ron were both awful friends. Hermione should have ditched them for new crowd.

DA Hermione wasn't much better, they all deserve each other.

Eh. Hermione's violent streak and sociopathic tendencies stick out to me a little more than Ron being pissy for a few weeks. Granted, she never imprisoned or permanently disfigured Ron or Harry specifically. Still... not a comfortable friend to have.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-07 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ron in the books was a really great character that was actually clever, etc. Over the movie adaptation of Ron. I only realized that when I started doing a re-read some years back

(Anonymous) 2022-06-07 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
A few days ago Wizarding World's FB had a caption of Rupert Grint as Ron with: "Ronald Bilius Weasley: usually worried, sometimes scared, and always a little bit confused 👑 Which moment do you think is the most iconic?"

And I was like, who the fuck are you people talking about?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-07 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I love Ron. My heart just swells with affection for this boy. He is so brave and loving and he reminds me so much of the boys I grew up with. The only time I ever cried reading a HP book was Ron's temptation with the locket.

The movies did him absolutely dirty and that's how people remember him.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-07 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
It was book Ron who didn't believe Harry in Goblet of Fire. It was book Ron who abandoned Harry for a time in Deathly Hallows. Yes, the locket was part of it, but Hermione and Harry both stayed on mission in spite of also being affected by the locket. Ron is a good friend, but you are kind of exaggerating just how good he is.

I think Ron gets a bad rep. He's a good friend but I think JK Rowling did him a disservice by leaning harder on Ron's less likable traits since early reception (first 2-3 books) it seemed like Ron and Harry were really popular but Hermione was seen as more annoying than most people's favorite. Maybe she felt a need to uglify his character a bit to not make him such a flawless best friend? Like, "See? Ron can be unlikable too."

And TBF I can see the progression of Ron growing resentment and harboring jealousy with Harry as the years go on.
At first he appreciates being friends with Harry because they're both lonely kids at a new school. Harry in a way looks up to Ron since Ron knows the norms and customs of the wizardry world. Ron is looked over in his family so it's nice to have someone Ron can kind of almost be an older brother to, someone who doesn't compare Ron to his brothers and dismiss him as the youngest and least Weasley brother, he's actually looking to Ron for knowledge and to feel welcomed into the world.
As time goes on, Ron's own brothers treat Harry with more respect. A lot of teachers seem to give Harry special attention that Ron doesn't get despite the pair sort of being academically on the same level. Even his parents can sometimes show special attention to Harry. Ron's risked his life a lot too yet Harry is the one with all the attention (which at times can seem like glory even if Harry doesn't like the attention). Harry gets all the opportunities to look like a hero or an important person, which of course, Ron knows Harry can't control. But I would imagine Ron can't help but feel jealous. His whole life he's lived under the shadow of others. When he thinks he can just be friends with Harry, turns out through the years there are bound to be situations where they can't help but be compared to each other. Or Harry gets opportunities Ron doesn't get and it seems like Harry takes it for granted.

It happens IRL. Some people spend a lifetime living in others' shadows, and Ron's always lived in his brothers' shadows (and then he's got a younger sister who is special in that she is the lone daughter in the family, Ron can't even be the baby of the family). And then turns out he's best friends with the one guy who people just cannot stop talking about...IDK if people can shake off an inferiority complex if they were best friends with Harry (through their entire teen years too).

Like, Ron's a good friend. He's allowed to have faults and not always be the best friend. But I do feel in some of the situations (both in the books and films) Ron's cruelty was a bit too much and came at the unfair price of his character development.

this is a pretty great deep-dive into his character. +100
