I think it's just a US/UK humor divide I'm afraid OP. What's appealing about UK shows is impossible to recreate in the US, and I suspect vice versa. The notable exception being Whose Line Is It Anyway, although I believe a lot of the British production crew were brought over, so maybe that was part of what made it work. Or maybe it was just the chemistry between everyone.

I think it is because Britain is shit and we know we are so self deprecation and performative idiocy is written intrinsically throughout our humour, but America is still laboring under the impression that they are great and the best and ra-ra-ra etc so there is a huge translation block there.

We certainly embrace self-deprecating humor lol. Also, there's a down to earth Ness about most of our comedians that you don't get in the US. Would I Lie To You for instance is reminiscent of people just hanging out in a pub to me. Just, really funny people hanging out in a pub.

There is a grandiosity even in American humor that just isn't there in British stuff.

As a huge fan of the OG show (and the nz version and the Norwegian version) I gotta disagree. This show could absolutely work in America. The biggest issue imo was the host they chose. I also think they didn’t really consider the mix of personalities which the other versions do so well.

I'm not familiar with the show, but it isn't as if comedy divides haven't been overcome before.
Like the OP made some good points as to why the show didn't work which sound more like bad direction over bad translation, like how the actors playing their characters rather than themselves, and going with some lacklustre Taskmaster. I feel like a lot of these types of shows are brought over as more of an attempt to advertise/boost the networks average ranked programs and as a f-list celeb role call promo, rather than any actual/genuine attempt to recreate any successful feature.
