I think it's just a US/UK humor divide I'm afraid OP. What's appealing about UK shows is impossible to recreate in the US, and I suspect vice versa. The notable exception being Whose Line Is It Anyway, although I believe a lot of the British production crew were brought over, so maybe that was part of what made it work. Or maybe it was just the chemistry between everyone.

I think there's just a huge difference in the industries around comedy in the UK and US. The US doesn't really do comedy panel shows, and American comedians that appear on UK panel shows are usually UK based. So, I just don't think any given American comedian is going to *get* it, even before looking at the humour divide.

To be honest I think it's a lot harder to cast people on Taskmaster than people realize. Even in the British show, where the tone and vibe of the show is well-established, there's been plenty of competitors who don't get the point and the humor of the show or stay too much in their pre-established persona. So it's not really surprising that this would be hit-or-miss when translating to other countries. And I doubt all of the other international versions have been successful either.

I don't think this is a humor divide OP, as some anons above me think. this is a competition divide. We don't do lighthearted competitions (and we don't really do "master" hosts either haha).

If somebody wanted to do taskmaster over here with our competition milieu it was need to be a competition for being the most unhinged in tasks, which we do fairly well, and a host which egged people on, which we also do fairly well, perhaps with some type of funny punishment mechanism. It would be a very different taskmaster, lbr.

Aww, this was my intro to Taskmaster and it was enough to get me interested in the original. It’s been a while, but I remember looking forward to how Ron Funches and Kate Berlant would approach their tasks (Funches was chill and Berlant tried to think around the challenges), and Freddie Highmore was also oddly sweetly sincere in his approach - all of them seemed to be game and having fun.

But yeah, Lisa Lampanelli felt like she was put in for contrast which sounds good on paper, but when her attempts all felt like brute force to get it over with, I ended up not paying as much attention during them. Dillon Francis seemed ok but in this context not much more.

I actually wish Reggie Watts had been a contestant, to lean into the absurdity and his improv! Trying to think who else might have done well in the “contrast” slot…

Honestly I feel the same way (also 30). Just about every show someone has recommended has just felt un-enjoyable, despite usually completing at least one series just to try and give it a go. So aside from youtube, I mostly watch cartoons/anime too.

I AGREE! I rewatched this movie a couple of months ago and as a concept it was sooo good!
I didn't even mind that J.LO was not that good and that some parts of the plot were very dated - I can't explain this properly now because I forgot, but when I was watching I remember thinking "WOW this is some old thinking you got there".

Still. A great movie.
