One the one hand I have a blocked ear due to a build up of earwax. The pharmacy was closed today but I'll get some drops tomorrow.

One the other hand I've been trying the curly girl method for about a month. I haven't used any styling products yet but from just changing the way I wash and dry my hair I now have ringlets starting to form.

CGM is amazing. It took me some time to find a good routine but co washing is my new normal and i have come to accept my curls.
(wash everything with hydrating conditioner, let sit, wash with baby shampoo)

Nayrt

I may have to try that particular order of steps. I started using CGM over a decade ago where I was just using conditioner and no shampoo and it worked amazingly for a few months... then my scalp started getting incredibly, painfully itchy and I had to start using anti-dandruff shampoo to stop the itching (even though I didn't have dandruff). I'll spare you the whole saga since, but I've come to rely on leave-in conditioner products, except it's really hard to find a good one and when I do, it inevitably gets discontinued after a few years.

i tried conditioner only but it made my hair feel icky and greasy and caused tons of buildup, so i added a mild, natural cosmetics shampoo for the end of the wet routine. (after that, microfiber towel and leave ins).

your scalp might have had an allergic reaction to something in the conditioner, which caused that itching. I had that when i used conditioner with tons of additives (perfume etc)

It could have been an allergic reaction, but I use lots of different brands of conditioner. These days my scalp will get itchy if I get sweaty (usually after a trip to the gym) and that itchiness is happening BEFORE I shower and put anything on my head. Back then, my job involved a lot of physical work outdoors so maybe it was a sweat thing then, too.
