The common "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" myth that has been around in America for a long time. And assumes everyone starts out at the same level and it is only personal choice that gets you where you end up. Is false. very false.

That's because pulling oneself up by one's bootstraps is not physically possible. The phrase was never meant to be inspirational. It was meant to highlight the impossible, and yet here we are.

This. Back in ye olde days, this was a little bit of hyperbole used to showcase someone who had beaten impossible odds to become successful. Sure, it was inspirational, but like those stories of mothers picking up cars to save their children or dogs traveling 800 miles to find their lost families. It wasn't meant to be a life goal.
