The common "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" myth that has been around in America for a long time. And assumes everyone starts out at the same level and it is only personal choice that gets you where you end up. Is false. very false.

That's because pulling oneself up by one's bootstraps is not physically possible. The phrase was never meant to be inspirational. It was meant to highlight the impossible, and yet here we are.

"that which does not kill you makes you stronger"
No.
that which does not kill you can still fuck you up real good.

Seriously. Whoever said that never dealt with a chronic illness.

Seriously. I don't know about the thing about Nietzsche below, but everyone I've ever personally heard say this has been super rich and privileged and never had to deal with any hardship in their lives.

I do like the pandemic iteration of it: "What doesn't kill you, mutates and tries again".

“Money can’t buy you happiness”. Maybe not, but it does make misery easier to bear.

That statement usually comes from people who are at least comfortable. Who can at least afford basics without living month to month.

Pretty sure there have been actual studies that found that up to a certain income level (the exact amount would depend on current local cost of living, I assume), money actually DOES buy happiness.

Fucking THIS. I grew up poor. Poverty is miserable. Escaping poverty would've made me ecstatic. Thinking about how much less poor I am now still makes me feel good.

Like the bootstraps one, that saying has been used out of context to the point where people forgot its original meaning. It wasn't intended for poor people. It was for rich people who made everyone hate them because they never used their money to help anyone but themselves and ended up lonely and miserable.

Yeah, that argument should only be used against billionaires and corporations. Of course, it'll be lost on them because at that point, they're too far gone.

'Practice makes perfect.'
Alas, many of us are not built to do do certain tasks brilliantly no matter how many times we perform them.

Look at that, I proved my own point. I can practice typing for decades and yet I still repeat words with fashionable error. 'Do do'... doo doo poopy posting a go-go, baby.

Yup. I’ve been doing embroidery for over twenty years and nothing that I’ve made looks as good as the works of art that people post on IG. It makes me happy though, so I keep at it.

Yep. I've been writing for over half my life and I still suck at it.

“Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all” — absolute bullshit. I still mourn everything I’ve lost, and I’m pretty old, so that’s a lot. I’d so much rather not know what I’m missing. Unpopular opinion, maybe, but that’s why I’m here.

"it gets better"

For some people it probably does, but I sure haven't ever found a reason to be glad I didn't kill myself at age 11.

Seconding most of the ones people have already said.

I'll add, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

This is true in some situations, but I strongly disagree with it as a universal rule of thumb. Negative thoughts and opinions are valid, and we should have plenty of avenues of expression open to us for those thoughts and opinions.

"Don't be relentlessly negative because it's hurtful and people won't like you." Extremely valid.

"Be sensitive to the feelings of others, and consider how your negative thoughts and opinions may hurt others if you express them out loud. Try not to hurt people." Extremely valid.

"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." Fucking toxic. Negativity is valid, and being able to express it somewhere and be heard and understood by others is hugely important to many people's mental and emotional health.

That not having a dream is sad or makes you boring and unimaginative. Let's normalize not wanting anything grand out of life.
