I don't really get the level of vitriol some fic writers have for certain characters. As a writer, I get that it can be interesting to make different characters into antagonists or villains. However, writing specific characters as completely amoral and relentlessly ignorant (with little basis in canon) through multiple stories seems... excessive to me, and, honestly, a lot of time and effort spent on a character you hate. Then again, I don't really get hatewatching either.

Yeah, when I really hate a character, I tend to leave them out of my fics entirely. If there's a character I kind of dislike but also understand the motivations of, they might be the 'bad guy' but in a nuanced way that's fair to them, but my real least favorites? I don't want to spend the time on them!

Sometimes when there's a character that I really loathe I write a fic from their POV. Sort of... getting them to explain their motivations to me.

Sometimes I'll still dislike them after that, but it helps... wrangle them in my head, I guess.

Those folks are annoying but I guess it's better for them to shit on a character and get out their frustrations than shit on someone IRL or something. I know, that's a pretty dumb example, and I'm not suggesting that it's in any way mature. I'm just saying one's preferable to the other.

Yeah, I don't get it, either. There's a character in my main fandom who's done some horrible things (although pretty much every character is morally grey and even the "good guys" have done horrible things) and the way some people act about him is insane. Like "accusing people who like the character of being racist pedophiles" levels of insane. I don't like him, either (not because he's a "bad guy" because my favorites have done "bad" things, too, I just don't find him particularly interesting) so I just ignore stuff about him. I don't know why that's so hard to do.

And the hatewatching...I definitely don't get that. Occasionally I'll see people come onto a fan forum for a show just to rant about how the show is awful and anyone who likes it is a moron, and it's just like...then why do you watch it? And why do you then feel the need to go online and bash it? Don't you have better ways to spend your time? I don't understand that impulse at all.
