Fandom thoughts/rants

Anyone have any general fandom thoughts to share?

I’m just really annoyed by people shouting “they’re minors and you’re perverts” at anybody who ships characters who are teenagers. Even moreso when the shippers age up the characters so they’re adults and they still get shouted at. What the hell even is that?

Yeah, antis suck, but as someone who unfortunately used to borderline be one, I'm so much more baffled by the antis who take issue with aging characters up. Like ffs, why are you STILL mad?! I guess I was like a 4/10 anti in my day, because these weirdos are taking it to a whole other level of insufferable.

As an actual queer person, I'm so tired of people in my fandom trying to gatekeep the "right" way to be queer, especially when the ones doing it are older straight women. I can't even remember the last time I was this into a fandom, and I had forgotten how *exhausting* all the drama could be.

Re: Fandom thoughts/rants

(Anonymous) 2022-06-22 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
This exchange made me think of an episode that happened to me, don't mind me just venting. It involved me (a panro ace woman), an "ex-friend" (a bi woman - technically a friend, but I had picked a fight with her friends before that and we had stopped talking by then) and a girl I didn't even know (she called herself a lesbian then but now I see she has "ace lesbian" on her profile which is another can of worms). Ex-friend is a BNF in BL fandom, girl I didn't know is a BNF in GL fandom I think?, I am a nobody who happens to be vocal about enjoying BL/GL (Apparently some people know me for that by now, and it makes me slightly disconcerted for reasons. See below)

One day silly me decided to thank this girl I didn't know for an informative thread on GL (the Japanese language barrier is always a challenge, so I was very thankful) and ask a few questions. I used the word "fetishize" because I use it regularly as someone who studied the concept at college-level and being the kind of ace who forgets that some words may have sexual meanings/implications. But this word angered her A LOT, and she snapped at me because "people [implied: sexually] fetishize lesbians" . So I said sorry, which was all I could do? (As someone who enjoyed GL before getting into BL precisely because BL felt too sex-focused to me, SIGH.) I had another point about BL (which is more my "area of expertise", thus this one wasn't a question) which she couldn't be bothered to read, so ex-friend comes in to "correct" my "lesbian-fetishizing cishet" ass on this point I wasn't even wrong about to begin with while the girl's followers harassed me for fetishizing lesbians (DUDE??? It wasn't even the wrong word! We just interpreted it WAY too differently!).

The thing is, I am not particularly OUT, if an aphobe/homophobe asks if I am straight I may go "uhh? I guess? *shrug*" . It's part of my personality and life circumstances, to each their own, only the wearer knows where the shoe pinches. Because of that I do my best to be humble and not gatekeep in a "I KNOW LGBTQ+ PEOPLE'S SUFFERING!" way - as I really don't for the most part, but in SOME ways I do which is why I fight against it. But I AM vocal enough about my passion for BL(/some GL) for people to fill in the blanks with whatever they want to believe in. This is the funny thing: they may choose to believe in ANYTHING, and it matters SO MUCH to them. Maybe it's because it never mattered to me (why should I care about what others do in bed) but it's funny to me how people assume... crap. By now some people think I am a closeted lesbian, others think I am a cishet lesbian-fetishizing trash (apparently?) but people seldom get it right.

Of course, what annoyed me on a personal level was realizing that they got to gatekeep how other people felt about queer media (not even aimed at queer people, mind you) and everyone who disagrees (or just "words things badly") MUST be a "fetishizing cishet". As I said, I often let others have it their way, particularly because I am not the kind of person who shares that kind of info on their profile description thus I tend to assume that others should have more of a say than me, I just don't feel like I have a lot to add. The irony in that (other than the fact that I was objectively correct as I ended up proving but was still raided by BNFs and their followers) is the fact that both are queer women just as much as I am - one an ace lesbian gatekeeping GL manga, the other a bi woman gatekeeping BL manga and both just as "straight passing" as me IRL I assume (at least ex-friend is) but they act like authorities on BL/GL manga because they're vocal about being LGBTQ+ (online) thus it's supposedly closer to their reality. Not saying it isn't - I totally know that feeling! Because, uh, it's how I fucking feel too. I just try to not gatekeep or act like my opinion on media is better (than cishet fans' or whatever) because of it, even more so because I am NOT a lesbian/gay male. Funny thing: neither are them. (As a P.S. it's worth noting that I picked a fight with "ex-friend"'s friends precisely almost a decade ago because I went out with a guy they were mutual friends with, got TIRED and got shit for it. I was young, buying into the "aces don't exist" discourse and following my therapist's suggestion, what can I say?)

Anyway, this "lesbian fetishizing cishet trash" episode was maybe one or two years ago and my Twitter account is set to private since then. I just don't want to deal with that kind of bullshit anymore. My job is tiring enough. Thanks for letting me vent?

All the "Minors DNI" warnings in author's notes so many fics have me rolling.

Like...on the one hand, I get it. You really don't know who's on the other side of the screen. Especially if you're writing smutty shit. On the other hand, I recall being 13-17 reading ALL kinds of smutty fic and at most telling the author I liked their story.

All of this to say, lmao when it's rated a certain way, you can write DNI All you want, but the youth are gonna read your shit regardless. I always did. And then your choice as author is to keep a limited interaction with anyone reviewing your fic -- thanks! Glad you liked it etc. But I do understand. That's why whenever I've written, at most I do a thank you in the A/N. I know it's a bit harder when you're on AO3 for the interaction.

Honestly when I was 13 I had been exposed to enough porn on the internet, too (like *cough* mpreg and explicit stuff) but I still make a point to be like "hey I am an ADULT and I won't follow you back if you're a kid" nowadays. I just feel... personally very uncomfortable talking to kids online. Maybe it's because I am quite childish myself and I have trouble "acting my age" so I had kids go "REALLY???" when I casually mentioned it. I just don't want to mislead anyone, even if unintentionally, kids or their parents tbh.

It's not that kids are reading smut, it's that they come in and start saying things like "I'm 10, and this is hot!" Like, dude, I know kids read smut, but I don't need to see written proof. It just makes things awkward.

Interacting with minors when you make smut will get you doxxed. If a minor tells you their age in their review of your NSFW, you are a groomer and other minors will come for you.

Re: Fandom thoughts/rants

When I say "Minors DNI" I mean, of course you're gonna be reading porn but I do NOT want to know about it and I certainly don't want to talk to you about it (or about anything else really).

I miss the days when if you were a minor in fandom you did your best to hide it. Frankly I think it's safer - all these profiles with teen ages listed strike me as wayyy more likely to attract predators than being discreet about it.

Explicit-rated fics are rated Explicit. That already implies Minors DNI.

Re: Fandom thoughts/rants

I don't really get the level of vitriol some fic writers have for certain characters. As a writer, I get that it can be interesting to make different characters into antagonists or villains. However, writing specific characters as completely amoral and relentlessly ignorant (with little basis in canon) through multiple stories seems... excessive to me, and, honestly, a lot of time and effort spent on a character you hate. Then again, I don't really get hatewatching either.

Re: Fandom thoughts/rants

(Anonymous) 2022-06-22 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, when I really hate a character, I tend to leave them out of my fics entirely. If there's a character I kind of dislike but also understand the motivations of, they might be the 'bad guy' but in a nuanced way that's fair to them, but my real least favorites? I don't want to spend the time on them!

Re: Fandom thoughts/rants

Those folks are annoying but I guess it's better for them to shit on a character and get out their frustrations than shit on someone IRL or something. I know, that's a pretty dumb example, and I'm not suggesting that it's in any way mature. I'm just saying one's preferable to the other.

Re: Fandom thoughts/rants

(Anonymous) 2022-06-22 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't get it, either. There's a character in my main fandom who's done some horrible things (although pretty much every character is morally grey and even the "good guys" have done horrible things) and the way some people act about him is insane. Like "accusing people who like the character of being racist pedophiles" levels of insane. I don't like him, either (not because he's a "bad guy" because my favorites have done "bad" things, too, I just don't find him particularly interesting) so I just ignore stuff about him. I don't know why that's so hard to do.

And the hatewatching...I definitely don't get that. Occasionally I'll see people come onto a fan forum for a show just to rant about how the show is awful and anyone who likes it is a moron, and it's just like...then why do you watch it? And why do you then feel the need to go online and bash it? Don't you have better ways to spend your time? I don't understand that impulse at all.

You ever read a book or watch a movie that is so perfect you feel like you just got stoned off of it? Mmmm. And even when you're still riding that high you wonder when your next fix will be, downright jonesing for more of that good shit.

Re: Fandom thoughts/rants

(Anonymous) 2022-06-22 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
For me this is almost always a fanfic experience. I think I was a teen the last time this happened with original fiction, but really excellent fanfic gets me feeling this way for sure.

And like, you get angry at all of the other books or movies or whatever that aren't as good and aren't as perfectly attuned to your taste.

I was just thinking today that unrelated-canon crossovers don't seem as common as they used to be. (By unrelated, I mean, not from the same adjacent franchise, or featuring actors who were a dynamic duo in a different show)

Is it just me?

I will never understand folks who buy an early access game, for less than half of the cost of the average completed game, and then whine at every update that enough content isn't being released at a rate they personally approve of. And then go on to scorn basically anybody who knew what they signed up for.

So much entitlement. I get that it can be frustrating waiting for new stuff, but this is the risk you take when play early access! And I don't excuse obviously lazy devs, but throwing money at someone doesn't guarantee a fast release schedule. And just because they aren't releasing things quickly (aka your approved schedule) doesn't mean they're lazy. Maybe consider they're putting more thought into the game than you are in your responses to updates. JFC.
