Re: Secrets you don't want to make...

Just found out that, apparently, some kid stole 27k CAD from a P5 AkeShu zine's funds and spent it all on Genshin Impact and, as a fan of both, I could only think:

1) How does an AkeShu zine raise 27k CAD to begin with?
2) How does one spend 27k CAD on Genshin Impact in few months?

It seems to me that the zine's mods (who are teens) are lying on both accounts. Perhaps it's a backhanded way of getting people to fund their zine. But the fandoms are fighting now, so... better keep quiet?

1) If it's a big ship, this wouldn't be too unusual but mostly gets more or less used up in production. Most zines rely on pre-orders + pay-up-front to make it even possible to get them into production. There's usually not a lot of profit left. So this might've been a matter of the money not having gotten used for printing yet. If the zine was around 27 CAD and 1k people pre-ordered... This is the reason why zines staffed with only teens get some well-deserved scrutiny and raised eyebrows sometimes.

2)Maxing out a 5 Star on hard pity would take at max ~2770 CAD. Considering there have been double banners for some months now, this would mean you'd absolutely manage to spend 27k on 10-11 5 stars if you were particularly unlucky.

Not saying it's true but it's in the realm of possibilty.

AYRT - It IS a big ship but oh God guess I am just not used to that. I keep forgetting how huge Persona is nowadays? Not used to huge fandoms?? But yeah, apparently the thief had funded a few zines successfully in the past so maybe the thief herself wasn't even that young, just the rest of the team, maybe. But regardless, yes, I suppose she could have spent it all in Genshin banners (because other than character banners there are weapon ones) but holy shit, that's being EXTREMELY greedy. NOTHING explains it rationally, even addiction. Either they deliberately scammed everyone, or someone is lying in this story ie. they actually used the money to pay student debts or they just wanted attention to the zine or something.

Aren't games like Genshin Impact wholly and entirely designed around getting whales to spend obscene sums of money? Isn't that the entire economic model?

Yeah, but ayrt is right, 27k in a few months is pretty steep. This isn't Diablo Immortal after all.

AYRT - In Genshin these obscene sums of money are spent on banners, seeing as there isn't a lot else you can do with it that you wouldn't be able to do in due time as a free player. (maybe skins but none were released in the past few months.) In other words, you COULD spend money on, say, items for raising your level, skills, etc but you can do all of that for free anyway if you're playing that often. You can get a "monthly subscription" for $10, or $20 if you are feeling particularly adventurous and want to get EVERY prize. And this is how much Genshin items usually cost. I suppose this is why it got very popular actually - you don't have to spend to get new maps (or even characters), individuals don't get to spend huge sums and its prices are often... fair. I never spent on it and I've been playing in-and-out for less than a year as a working adult and have pretty much everything I want (in terms of characters, good weapons/artifacts etc.) anyway.
So yeah, like the other anon said, it's just not how people think it is. There are far worse (and more addictive/costly) games that follow the "gacha" model. This amount (roughly 2 years worth of my pay) sounds crazy to me.
