… do people really hate infidelity in fics that much? I really like it, and would happily say so off anon.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-24 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it personally, but I'm not an anti about it. I just avoid it.

Same.

I hate it a lot, but just avoid reading it.

I think a lot of people strongly dislike when it shows up in a romance story & it's portrayed as romantic and positive and fluffy.

For me personally I like it sometimes in smutty kinky ways but not as a romance trope.

Seconding!

(Anonymous) 2022-06-25 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
OP - I don't like it as an uncomplicated romance trope. There has to be a LOT of turmoil and guilt and internal crisis involved. It's a very unromantic romantic trope, for me. It's messy and ugly, like a serious wound that desperately needs cleaning before it's too late.

Out of genuine curiosity, what sorts of kinks are there for infidelity? Like, cuckolding kink or? Infidelity is definitely a very sexual trope for me, in that the characters feel out of control of themselves; they're doing something very wrong and hurtful but they can't seem to stop. But I'm not sure if it's a kinky thing for me--unless you count that sort of obsessive, heedless want of each other as a kink in and of itself.

That's what I had in mind, yeah. Although cuckolding stuff can also work under the right circumstances.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-25 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay, in that case yeah, I get it.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-25 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
One of my favorite smut fics ever (can't find it again, sorry, please don't ask) was a fic where A/B are having sex and you think it's cheating because canonically B is married to C, and they're talking about C and how upset he would be if he knew...

and they're both well aware that C is in the closet watching them and jerking off and having a great time, because they're a polyam triad and they always knew he liked to watch, but it was his fantasy to role-play it being ACTUAL cheating.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-25 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
I get where you're coming from, but personally I see infidelity roleplay kink as fundamentally different than infidelity kink. Characters getting off on the mutually agreed upon fantasy of infidelity is just qualitatively so different than characters fetishizing the infidelity they are actively committing.

So when I said I wasn't sure how you could make cheating kinky, that's what I meant. I meant kinks based on the characters actually cheating.

AYRT

Yes, and also infidelity in fictional romance can be very cathartic for people who would never cheat IRL, but do fantasize about it. It's a totally common and normal thing to fantasize about.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-25 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
sa

People use fiction to explore the emotions of breaking taboos vicariously through the characters. Even if you would never cheat yourself, it can be powerful and sexy to explore the intensity of emotion that could compel someone to do that.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-25 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course. I do not mean "how could you!" in the moral sense, I mean literally how, as in I'm not sure what infidelity kink (actual infidelity not roleplay) would look like in a fic.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-24 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
idk, it's not my thing, I have literally zero fucks to give. I don't read it because it's not in my wheelhouse just like furry and A/B/O is not my thing so I don't read it.

but holy shit in some corners of fandom anything that even suggests cheating, including open relationships, is villified as fuck like cheating on someone is worse than murder. I had someone comment on my fic which was clearly tagged open relationship and poly and threesome that characters A and B would never cheat on each other how dare I, I'm filth and evil. I had to report them because their vitriolic comments would just keep coming no matter how often I deleted them. so yeah, some people do. even if it's just a whiff of "infidelity if you assumed this ship was monogamous even though I never said it was."

(Anonymous) 2022-06-25 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
The idea that open relationship or poly or consensual threesomes is the same thing as cheating actually makes me see red with rage.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-24 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don’t like it, but I don’t like it in the way I don’t like several other things in fic like ABO, furry, gore, etc. It’s really not a big deal, I just avoid it. No hate to the people that like it.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-25 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Welp, F!S has spoken and the overwhelming consensus is, yeah, people hate it! Lol!

In all seriousness though, the thing I've noticed about infidelity as a trope is that it almost never shows up when people are asked about tropes/kinks they like (even when the question is about unpopular tropes/kinks that people like), but it shows up quite frequently when people are asked about tropes/topics that they always dislike and will nope out of immediately.

Infidelity isn't disliked as vociferously as some other tropes, but I can't really think of any other tropes where the "likes" to "dislikes" ratio is so heavily slanted to the dislikes.
