Has shipping characters ever helped you emotionally in some way?

Inspired by today's Secret #8.

Yes! It's helped me identify the aspects of a relationship that appeal to me on both deep and superficial levels, which honestly is invaluable to me as a queer person growing up without many "models" of relationships that applied to me. Being able to engage and analyze ships in fandom gave me words for the things I'd always cared about.

Well, writing about my OTP living their best lives with a guaranteed happy ending helps me get through rough patches, so there’s that.

Almost every aspect of my approach to friendship and romance has been shaped by a two decades long introspection through fic reading.

I feel like a lot of my ships are emotional catharsis, in many ways.

Most my ships are cathartic in some way.

I'm aegosexual/aegoromantic, so shipping is basically my entire sexual and romantic outlet. I'm not actually sure what would happen to me without it, tbh.

(No, I don't walk around insisting people use the terms aegosexual and aegoromantic; I'm using them here because it's necessary for the point I'm making.)

100% same.

I've always shipped my faves with myself. Growing up these characters I would ship myself with (as well as the version of my I wanted to be) helped boost my self esteem/help form who I am today. I haven't thought about that in a long while -- kind of in a slump. But maybe I should, so I can revisit the person I wanted to be.

Snake/Otacon got me through a couple really rough moments in my life.

Definitely. I'm usually numb to emotions a lot and watching most media I don't feel much at all - even though there's no doubt that there's media with heavier emotional themes, fanfiction and the vast majority of the ships I've shipped have been the thing that make me feel something to the point of crying & feeling emotionally invested in (which helps since you can go look up tags like angst and hurt/comfort - even going way back to ffnet days it was easy to just pick the two genre tags like romance and hurt/comfort or angst to find the stories I'm looking for.)
