Yeah, this, pretty much. OP sounds pretty young imo, and while it is ok to feel some kinda way about how birthday gifts are reciprocated, they are just that: gifts, and the receiver is free to return the gesture or not, because actual gifts don't come with strings attached like "I gave you X, now you owe me Y".

Don't ask for cash, OP. Its rude.
