6,000 American soldiers died in the Vietnam War in 1966, 11,000 died in 1967, and 17,000 died in 1968 (with 1968 being the tipping point year in terms of the unpopularity of the war in America, where the majority of Americans from that point on agreed that the war had been a mistake). In contrast, about 7,000 American soldiers died in total over the entire course of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars combined.

And TBH I also don't think it's accurate to describe those wars as markedly popular, at least not during the last 10 years or so. Especially Iraq.
