What a day

Of little interest to most, but huge excitement for my little corner of the world was the Lionesses win.

Then came online and saw that Nichelle Nichols had died. :( :( :(

RIP Nichelle Nichols :(

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I just saw that too, that's so sad. I was watching interviews with her the other month, she seemed like such a great lady, and inspirational to so many.

Congratulations on the win! I hope this soothes the sting of last year. The videos of huge watch parties including men and boys made me very happy.

Aww. I know things have been rough on her for a while. May she RIP.

....I just was messing around with 3D modeling all afternoon and this was my first foray into anything online after having satisfied myself with the outcome.

Jaw literally dropped. :(

OH no. I just woke up from a nap and had not hear that yet. That's so sad. She was an amazing woman.

Pat Carroll also died. :(

Advice

(Anonymous) 2022-07-31 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
For your advice needs.

I am travelling to Edinburgh/Scotland for the first time ever for my summer vacation.
If any of you have some essential tips or info (where definitely to go, where NOT to go, stuff like that) I'd be really grateful. :D

Arthur's seat is pretty cool. Afternoon tea at the Balmoral is delicious if pricey. Graveyard ghost tour is hugely enjoyable. Highly recommend Panda cocktail bar if it survived the pandemic.

As a Weegie, my advice on places to not go is just Edinburgh. If you must go, then make sure you take plenty of money and have a high tolerance for tartan bedecked bullshit.

You can always go protest outside JK rowling's house. Maybe if she is in and not in London, where she pretty much really lives now, she'll get mad enough to tweet about you.

I really liked going to see Skara Brae. It's over on the Orkneys. We got a really nice airbnb and since you're in the middle of nowhere, I saw the milky way for the first time.

Don't drive on Skye. When not in town, it's one lane, twisty, and the locals take the speed limit as a suggestion.

I really enjoyed the walking tour of Edinburgh. Four members of my family, including me, and we had a tour guide all to ourselves.

I like museums and historical tours. Some of my favorites from Edinburgh are:

The Real Mary King's Close
https://www.realmarykingsclose.com/
Costumed tour guides show you around a 17th century street preserved beneath modern Edinburgh. (Possible Covid concern: I don't know what ventilation is like since it's all literally underground.)

Surgeons' Hall Museums
https://museum.rcsed.ac.uk/
History of medicine with a focus on how it was practiced in Scotland. Some of the exhibits are a bit gruesome, which may be a DNW or a draw for you, depending on your taste.

National Museum of Scotland
https://www.nms.ac.uk/national-museum-of-scotland/
Excellent general museum exploring art/history/natural history/science. My absolute favorite part is the Millenium Clock (https://www.nms.ac.uk/explore-our-collections/stories/art-and-design/millennium-clock-tower/), a massive, gorgeously grotesque work of art that comes to life every hour when the clock tolls.

Camera Obscura & World of Illusions
https://www.camera-obscura.co.uk/
Museum focused on vision and optical illusion, with a 19th century camera obscura (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camera_obscura) on the top floor. imo, most of the exhibits are fun but not necessarily the sort of thing you want to devote precious holiday time in another country to, but the camera obscura is wonderfully memorable. On the other end of the scale, the tunnel pictured on the website homepage is a dizzy delight--I usually walk through it upwards of two dozen times.

Closed at the moment, but may reopen before your trip
Sir Walter Scott Monument
https://www.edinburghmuseums.org.uk/venue/scott-monument
It looks like a regular monument from the outside, but you can climb up it. Lovely Gothic architecture and exciting views.

Kenneth MacAlpin. It is hard to disrespect a man who made a whole country.

I'll admit to a fondness for the various Saxon kings down south of the Rio Tweed too though, before the Bastard came.

Alexander Romanov II. Eleanor Roosevelt. William Wilberforce. Does RBG count as a historical figure? Ida Wells. Victoria Claflin Woodhull, who was fascinating.

Oskar Schindler. He was a flawed man who saved thousands of people.

Date Masamune because he was a madlad. He founded the city of Sendai and championed his people, but also played the long game wisely to make sure he didn't get his ass killed prematurely for backing the wrong shogun. He may or may not have killed his father accidentally while killing the man attempting to kill him. He named his horse the equivalent of "Blackie." He trolled all of his elite rivals though cleverly-worded letters and occasional pranks. He made all of his men dress flamboyantly to the point that it coined a term in Japanese: "Datemono" or Dateotoko, meaning essentially a dandy or a flashy dresser. Dude also definitely fucked everyone and everything. He wrote the Vatican to invite the Pope to visit Japan during a time when Tokugawa was aggressively stamping out chistianity. Mad. Lad.
