I do side-eye it a little, but I wouldn't say people making money off their fanworks are parasites. There's a ton of free fanart and fic out there and if somebody puts their stuff behind a paywall, I just don't pay and move on.

I think they mean 'parasite' in the sense of leeching off the popularity of the thing they're making fanworks about, knowing full well (as someone else commented above) that people would not pay for them if they were original rather than fanworks.

You asked why the OP called people who monetize fanworks 'parasites'. I wasn't preaching, just positing an answer to the question.

Parasite usually means 'leeching off an unwilling host' though. If someone is choosing to pay for a fanart/fic commission, it's not unwilling.

I personally don't care one way or another. The amount of free vs paid stuff in fandom still skews overwhelmingly free.
