None of the above anons, but it's a combo of oversaturation, bad experiences with people, and the frequent lack of any attempt to engage with the actual history (which is annoying because 19th century science is SO MUCH more batshit. yes, even more batshit than that) Plus all of the above ruining it for people who are actually into 19th century/mechanical tech and the culture around it.

But mostly? It's because the gears don't work. Make the gears actually turn that is what they are for!!! The longer I stare at the average steampunk design the more frustrated my nd mechanical brain gets. (If you make steampunk stuff where the mechanical parts actually do things you're exempt.)
