Old school fandom did charge money. They just didn't broadcast it on the mailing lists or message boards or their sites as it was always a violation of whatever site's TOS. But if you went on the right IRC, or onto a private message board maintained on a server in a country with no copyright laws, you could find the people who were taking commissions, and there were a lot of them.

Frankly, I think it's great. Copyright law is a direct bi-product of late-stage capitalism. People should violate it just like people should pirate.
