Yes, that does sound profoundly irritating.

I notice it's mostly younger/inexperienced writers that do this. Back in my wattpad days, it was commonplace to have moments where an image of the ugliest fucking dress you've ever seen is whats been perscribed for your self-insert to wear.

I've noticed it mainly in reader-insert fics, but where the person is obviously only writing about themselves and not taking into account that other people who are much different from them are going to be reading it.

If you want to detail specific clothes/other shit for your character, PLEASE just tag it as an oc-insert

Agree for the most part... though, TBF, the 'limits fic access to registered users only' part may be less about ego and more about making damn sure the real people their RPF is about can't get to it. This part, at least, seems to be pretty common (and common-sense) practise in RPF circles, for obvious reasons.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I archive-lock all my (not RPF) fic by default because... my fic is for people that I am in community with and I simply do not care if more people who haven't even bothered to get an account read it? It's not for them. Didn't realize people were judging me for having an "ego" or whatever, but, uh, I also don't care about that, so go right ahead.

I agree. Also, it's not exactly hard to register an AO3 account, it only takes a week or so for the invite code to arrive, so it's hardly a high barrier for people to pass if they really want to read the fic.

Yeah I remember back on LJ I'd see RPF comms that were locked to members-only specifically for this reason, which isn't a bad call imo, most RPF shippers I know don't actually want their fic getting anywhere near the people it's about. Even on a hypothetical off-chance.

Yep yep, this. I agree with most of the secret, but if the fic in question is RPF then deffo expect it to be archive-locked to keep it out of search results and off the wayback machine.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not always ego that restricts comments and fic to registered users only, it's often past experiences with trolls (not honest criticism) in the comments. AO3 is better than most places online, but it still attracts them.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
good point. I've seen in the past, when tumblr armies were much more motivated, someone link a fic linked to them so they can pile on the author with threats even though none of them even bothered to read the fic before getting mad. it's less common now but less is not zero; if I wrote anything that someone from a touchy fandom could take the wrong way and send their hordes after me, I'd community-lock too, whether it's a pairing, a kink, RPF names, etc.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I've known people who have definitely been harassed for what they write. I lock some of my fics because

A) They've been available for awhile and I simply feel like that fic's had it's chance to get an audience and I "retire" it to registered users.

B) I'm nervous about the creator/actor/celebrity finding it. Fanfic is an internal thing for the fans, it makes things weird if the creator sees it.

C) I have someone in my life who lacks boundaries and I think they've already found my account. I locked down some of my weirder stuff to force them to go an extra few steps to invade my privacy.

Shut the fuck up with your AO3 bashing. You are not welcome here, get it?

You do you, anon, but I really like how fics being formatted in HTML/CSS allows writers to reject traditional form constraints. Sure, it's badly done sometimes, but that can be true in fanfiction of any kind. On the other hand, if it's done well, it can be genuinely exciting and innovative.

Maybe they just want it to be like an illustrated story?

I dunno, I haven't ever really run across that sort of thing.

I registered-lock all my stories, but I don't moderate my comments. I guess you can only half judge me, op. Heh

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen it in smut with like porn gifs and I'm like... listen, if I want to watch porn I can just do that? Bizarre.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
In the case of at least one writer I know, with text messages it's autism-brain going "no, the formatting must be Correct" instead of whatever else you're imagining.

It's your prerogative not to like it, but in many ways I still see fanfic as very id-driven in general. Also some people like visual stuff. So it's their thing, not yours, and that's okay.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-09 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind when there's a graphic for a text message conversation because as a writer, I find texted conversations kind of clunky/awkward to write out. The rest of your examples annoy me, though.

1st point sounds more like a problem with very young fic writers, to me. While I've not encountered that specific type of thing before, I've seen similar things, and it always comes with the vibe that the writer is probably quite young, and I can see that especially if it's from some sort of RPF (depending on what is being written about and what type, not talking down to RPF writers here). I definitely can see that being annoying, they'll most likely grow out of it. Overall, sounds like some wattpad type stuff.

Last thing just annoys me. Anyone should be able to mod comments and limited access. It's sort of a dick move to laugh at people for not wanting to (possibly) face harassment, coming from someone who writes more "problematic" stuff in a fandom that's not as accepting of that as I'd like it to be. I like to have control over who sees/comments on certain fics, due to harassment I've faced in the past that could have been prevented if I had turned the limit access on. I have enough trouble with my real life, I don't need to be getting stressed out from my online presence, too. I imagine some others hold the same sentiment.

Re: limiting access and/or comments

Yup!!!

Got a couple negative comments and the first was a pretty legit criticism, and I didn't think too much about it. Replied with "appreciate your criticism but I did ABC instead of XYZ because EFG. No hard feelings" and was like, "Oh well. What I write isn't for everyone."
Second comment was just straight up asshole. Came off petty and personal because it was a pseud (months later this account was deleted) with one sentence that wasn't even about the fic, it was aimed directly at me as a writer.
At first, I thought it was just a random asshole but when I told a friend about it they seemed eager to change the subject and made a "members of this fandom wouldnt do this" comment that felt really defensive for no reason (but I brushed it off as maybe I'm reading too much into people's words). I kept telling myself this friend was likely busy with work like they had told me but IDK...as the months went on I've come to suspect they were the asshole who left me that comment.
If it wasn't them, because I've known this friend for almost 2 decades, they likely were talking a lot of shit about me behind my back as they hate read my fics and one night maybe one of their friends was emboldened enough to leave me a comment to show me up and make our "friend" feel better about how they dislike me/my fics.

When my suspicions grew, I decided to screen my comments on AO3. I honestly don't give any fucking shits if anyone thinks I'm too sensitive or whatever about receiving criticism that I screen and mod my comments. Good that they have the thick skin to allow anyone to just say whatever they want on their fics, but I don't want to encourage any "friends" to use my fics as a way for them to partake in their asshole behavior just because they're feeling envy/hurt/anger/annoyance/I don't know over my stupid fucking fics.

Sorry, I didn't mean to dump this here....I haven't talked to anyone at all about this and I think I've been wanting to say this 😳😅

This is one of those "I don't like [thing] either, but I'm not interested in agreeing with you when you're being such a dick about it" secrets.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-10 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
lol yup

+2

Personally don't care one way or the other, and from someone who is far too lazy to do that kind of thing, I even think with moderation, it looks cool sometimes. OP is definitely full of themselves though.

I love this stuff! I get why it's annoying, but I love to see people so interested in what they're writing and wanting to share their whole thought process and make it multi-media! Also, idk I pretty much only see in reverse bangs which for obvious reasons encourage it.
