Your stories sound true to the spirit of what -punk is about.

Like my problem with steampunk is it's not punk. It's plastic goggles you can buy at Spirit of Halloween. It's unabashed worship of British imperialism and the Victorian era. It's an aesthetic rather than an interrogation.

It doesn't help that the first steampunk I read was China Miéville and only a fraction of the genre lives up to that standard. But give my actual punk steampunk and I'm here for it.

Solarpunk, imo, is slightly harder to commodify. But also much harder to write.

Solarpunk clothes just aren't as cool-looking at steampunk outfits.

Hah point.

But consider: natural dyes and breathable designs...

This is a common critique of steampunk but tbh.... I'm really not sure how much it holds up? Unfortunately I don't have a detailed list of representative examples of the genre so I'm going off vibes here a bit. But my impression is that more recent steampunk stuff (as in, stuff from the last 5-7 years) actually generally does try to engage with the political and material realities of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, rather than being merely a costume that people put on.

My impression, honestly, is that there was a lot of really crappy steampunk material being produced from roughly 2005 to 2015, but not really for any deep underlying structural or theoretical reason, it was just bad because it was bad.

This. There's good and bad steampunk--the bad is plastic and imperial worship, the good is actually addressing and analyzing the imperialism and industrial class stratification. Unfortunately the aesthetic is the easiest thing for people to see first, so that's the primary reputation. Sigh.

I do think that there have been a lot of steampunk fans who contributed to steampunk earning that reputation as well

Well, yeah. That's how every group tends to go.

I was in a steampunk society for a time. There are a few people I still keep in touch with (mainly the BIPOC folks and one other guy) but definitely the steampunk fans ultimately contributed to my later skepticism of the genre.

Yes, there's a fantastic anti-colonialism backlash going on in steampunk and I love it.

Comment OP

Thank you :).

I do find Solarpunk fascinating as an idea and in this thing Im planning i try it in multiple different ways .

I studied a number of different established 'punk' things and I feel like I could do something interesting with a lot of them
