What are the "hidden gems" of your favorite genres?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
And what do you consider overrated?

Firefly is vastly overrated. The story isn't amazing, the theme sucks, and the editing is horrible.

So overrated. Although I do enjoy it. But it isn't amazing, isn't groundbreaking, isn't perfect. And the only reason it is enjoyable is because it was cancelled. The few episodes we have are mostly watchable and fun, but it would not have lasted.

I love the universe, I must say...I think a lot of people did. But story-wise, it's average at best for that time period.

This. My friend makes fun of me a little, because every time I see another "Firefly was closed too soon" I get annoyed

Probably going to get yelled at especially since I was just talking about what a giant Beatle fan I am but I think Hey Jude is a very overrated song. Half of it is "nuh nuh nuh".

Best Beatles songs to me are A Day In The Life and Eleanor Rigby. What are your favs?

I love most of the songs the Beatles did, can't really pick any faves. The two you named are great. Hope you don't think this answer is a cop out.

I agree, the nanananaaa make it drag on too long in my opinion, but I guess some people enjoy sining along with that part.

Hey Jude is a dirge, man. Love Me Do is where it's at.
philstar22: (Galaxy Quest: Doctor Lazarus)

Event Horizon is one of the best movies of both the horror and scifi genres. Amazing movie.

Legend of the Seeker can be cracky at times but it is just a genuine joy to watch. And full of equal opportunity sexy. Galavant is cracky on purpose and it is so good.

Firefly is so overrated.

Galaxy Quest is semi-known, but it should be far more known than it is. Amazing movie. Mystery Men is also really great.

I got kicked off a Trek site for speculating that Tony Shaloub's character in Galaxy Quest had an Asian name because it was an in joke referring to the fact that Brent Spiner played Dr. Soong in Next Gen. I still think I'm right.

Ha. I can totally see that. I love Galaxy Quest so much. It is spoofing Star Trek (and other scifi to a lesser extent), but in a loving way. And it is just a genuine joy to watch.

I never thought it was referencing a specific casting choice, but I assumed it was meant as a dig at shows treating non-white people as interchangeable or just casting white actors in non-white roles. Ricardo Montalban as Khan is another Trek example.

I love Event Horizon. I was baffled it wasn't more popular.

I feel like I'm the only person who found Event Horizon just... meh. Am I broken? xD

Nope, right there with you. I was pretty meh about it, mostly I guess because I was hoping for a cool sci-fi show and what i got was schlocky 'sci fi horror' with mutterings about hell and gross out gore. Meh, meh, meh.

Agatha Christie is overrated. Not bad, just, overrated.

I feel that way about her Miss Marple books. I love the Poirot ones and the non-series ones. But Marple is super overrated.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of the Poirot books. I've tried.

The Long Kiss Goodnight is a pretty good action movie, it's funny and definitely not a cookie-cutter type. I think some have reevaluated it since, but it did not do well on release.

I think Spy is pretty overrated. I like Melissa McCarthy, but I didn't think it was funny. I could tell the comedy beats they were aiming for, but none of them landed for me. So, the whole movie fell flat.

The Hole (1998) is a deeply underrated RomCom.

Genre: JRPGs

Hidden gem: EVERYONE PLEASE PLAY ROGUE GALAXY. It's a little grind-y at times but my god, what a great universe. Space pirates! Robots! Found families! I love it so, so much. And it's one of the few PS2 JRPGs that hasn't gone through the roof in price, haha.

Overrated: The super obvious answer is Final Fantasy VII (and it is deeply overrated), but I'll dodge that to say instead Persona 5, because my god people act like it's the next coming or something. It's stylish af, don't get me wrong, but the writing is just the usual middle-of-the-road Atlus Teen Drama writing, the battle system is super dated, the dungeons were just kind of meh... like it's fine? I picked it up used for $15 and it was worth that. It's just okay. Killer soundtrack though, admittedly.
