I like canonically trans characters. I also like canonically non-gender-conforming characters who remain identifying as cis, because presentation =/= gender.

Both are rare. I wish we could have both at the same time.

Umbrella Academy has both!

(Anonymous) 2022-08-14 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

Didn't the Bridget thing end up being a mistranslation after all? I thought it came out (as it were) that Bridget was doing the usual "ffs I'm a man but fine, whatever" thing and everyone was just running with a sarcastic "oh yeah, I'm totally a woman" line.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-14 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)

There's a clip in GuiltyGear Strive where Bridget says "I'm a girl!" in the English dub.

I feel like the people telling you that it was a mistranslation don't actually know very much Japanese. The way the line is written *and* performed is fairly obviously not sarcastic, in my opinion.

I agree, both Bridget and Chihiro were forced (more so in Bridget's case) to dress, act, and live as women. And this "reveal" or "acceptance", whatever people want to call it, for Bridget feels like such a cop-out. Gives big forced feminization vibes. But whatever.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Forced feminization is a huge popular kink in a lot of Anime-adjacent media so I'm not at all surprised they did this.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-14 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Literally all of my trans friends loved the reveal though? So I'm gonna go with what they think about it being positive rep.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Some of my trans friends loved it and some of them didn't, my partner included. So I'm going to say the reaction is more divided than you think.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Translation: One person disagreed, everyone else loved it. OPINION MUST BE DIVIDIED, BOTH SIDES!!!11!ELEVEN!!

Shut the fuck up and let people be happy about this, especially with how everyone is slamming on trans people twenty times a day right now.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, one person's anecdotal evidence doesn't agree with one other person's anecdotal evidence!
You shut the fuck up invalidating other trans people's dislike of something. Just because some like it doesn't mean others aren't allowed to dislike it.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Are you trans? I'm not, but damn if I'm not tired of people who aren't bi telling me every somewhat flawed portrayal of a canon bi character was bad representation. I imagine trans people feel the same way, and know good representation better than you do. That said, the opinions on this being canon seem split but too many of the dissenting opinions coming from non-trans people are not being made in good faith.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the bad faith dissenters are from Terf-Island too, what a surprise.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure they do. Whatever you want to make yourself believe. Everyone who doesn't like the shota-turned lolibait trans girl must be a TERF or transphobic, even the trans people who hate it.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to be trans to recognize shit writing when you see it.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's not shit writing. It's honestly the most nuanced take you can have when the character started as a literal gay panic joke.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-16 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
How is "this character was forced into this and kept trying to hold onto their real gender until they someday gave up and gave in to the pressure put on them" good writing?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
At this point I've kinda stopped caring about "good" "representation" because every time people talk about it it's just "no actually the thing you like is bad".

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK, she feels a lot more genuine. She has a fraught and difficult problem and comes to the decision on her own that she's HAPPY as a girl, and that her problems weren't with femininity but that her entire problem was with how femininity was sold to her.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes me feel really warm and fuzzy, so I've decided not to care about other people's opinions.

Bridget was an important part of someone close to me being able to come out as trans, so we both have a really personal relationship with her. And I'm also trans and like... I don't find her upsetting/'bad rep'? To me, she doesn't read as predatory or creepy or evil and anyone putting that on her is bringing their own issues to the table, she's just cute (and, it being Guilty Gear, badass).
