Something I love to do is to read alot of fic published by other people and sort of analyze them (basically make a mental list of the things I liked about the fic while noting things I wish were done better). When you go to write something, think of things you have read in the past with a similar theme, and try to apply things in a way you would want to see them written as if you were the reader.
