You might want to look into beginners writing groups/classes - even if you're used to writing fics, its still opened to give advice and more room to be imperfect (when I went to one - I used characters from Naruto as characters bases but with different names since it was all for practice).

If looking into classes or group isn't your thing; if you have a tumblr or can use the page without an account - I sometimes go to a blog call nimblesnotebook for prompts and writing advice:
https://nimblesnotebook-blog.tumblr.com/tags
HOWEVER - the blog hasn't been updated for 6 years, but I like the advice on it.

Not OP Re: writing groups

If you write dark fic that's not necessarily an option.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-14 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like in the day of the internet there's gotta be some sort of dark writing group somewhere. Look at the shit that gets published...

I know there are alot of discord servers for people that write darkfic, but it's discord, so...

Try looking for horror writing groups?

Depends how dark and in which ways. My original stuff is pretty dark (albeit less sexual than my fic) and I still went into regular writing competitions with it.

I mean maybe talk to the person leading the class and ask what is and isn't OK to write for a group setting?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-14 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret has a very nice design.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-14 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? It's very pleasing to look at.

I feel you, OP. My fandoms do use betas, but I don't really know how to find one.

You can ask for a beta here: https://betaplease.dreamwidth.org/

Also, fuck it - if a writing club won't help you be a better writer 'cause you write fic, find a better club. Or, if it's embarrassment, change the names of the characters for the club/editing purposes.

Good luck, OP - even just reading everything you can (particularly styles and genres you really like) will help you be a better writer.

Even if beta reading is not the custom in your fandom, it can't hurt to ask if anyone is willing to do it.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-14 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah as long as you're not asking someone to edit canon compliance, someone in any fandom/no fandom should be able to do simple SPAG and even plot-holes/etc without knowing the canon.

I recently asked a friend of mine to beta read a fic for a fandom they know nothing about, and they helped me out with some things like grammar.

there is lots of free writing advice on tumblr! (Always remember advice is guidelines, not rules) Including Hey Writers, reference for writers, the writers helpers, the writers archive, and the literary architect. Lots of free stuff. Lots of it good. (One will eventually lead you to others.)

Read critically! Is there something in a genre you want to write? Even if it's fic, you've got some type of category you're writing from found family to romance, to mysteries. (I dunno.) Find and read stuff in a similar genre (fic or pubbed) and analyze WHY it works. (And then toss what you don't like, especially in trad pubbed stuff. They sell what they think sells. It might not be what you want to read and write.)

Relax. Take one bit at a time. Want to work on dialog. Just work on dialog and finding ways to not do question and answers or 'how can I say it without being blunt and outright saying it!' Want to tackle description, then just tackle description. Want to work on action, then remember it's action. Reaction. Each sentence does one thing. Each paragraph is for one thing. But just focus on action (Smut falls under action.)

If you want basic grammar and SPAG, Grammarly can help. Like most writing programs it's better for technical writing than creative writing. So, take it with a grain of salt. Hemmingwayapp is for 'readability' if you're worried about that. But remember, Hemmingway hated adverbs and any "extra" type of text. (Sometimes we need it creatively.)

Hope this helps!

You could try writing "respectable" fanfic for the writing group - Holmes, Shakespeare, Austen. Those are very mainstream now. You could even mumble something about training wheels, lol.

My recommendation is to marry another fic writer then you can beta for each other. Even when we don't share a fandom, she can still give me a basic SPAG and flow beta.

the community here on dreamwidth, getyourwordsout, is accepting of both fic and original work. you can't join until January because it's a year-long thing, and it requires a writing goal/pledge to get in (which you can choose the lowest minimum in wordcount or days to work) with check-ins (but no penalty for not making your goal. just do a day a month and check in with that and you're fine). they have a discord that offers promotion channels and ways you can ask for beta exchanges.

it's August so this isn't an immediate solution to your issue but if this structure interests you subscribe to the community so you get the notice when sign-ups open.

Something I love to do is to read alot of fic published by other people and sort of analyze them (basically make a mental list of the things I liked about the fic while noting things I wish were done better). When you go to write something, think of things you have read in the past with a similar theme, and try to apply things in a way you would want to see them written as if you were the reader.
