NAYRT - They didn't say anything remotely preachy. Reusing stuff from previous years is just common sense. If that seems preachy to you, that's very much a you problem.

Right? Kids today don't know how to be frugal. Every year I take one sip of a pumpkin spice latte from 2017, then it goes right back into the fridge. One day, I hope to pass it down to my grandchildren to enjoy!

...Buying cheap decorations tends to be one-time use, though????

IDK what other people are buying, but I reuse the majority of my decorations.

For instance, things from last year that I put in storage: 60 construction paper bats, black and orange tinsel garland, a silver sequin skull mask, Halloween-themed candle jars (you can put a new candle in them once the original wax is used up), orange fairy lights, plastic bugs and spiders, strands of garland skulls, large balloon letters spelling out 'Happy Halloween', a cheapo plastic skeleton, 3 Halloween themed beanie babies.

Things that got thrown away: streamers, pumpkins, gourds, fake cobwebs.

I will probably rebuy the same throwaway items this year, and add a couple of items to the reusable decorations, and that's about it.

I live in a small-ass apartment and I still store my seasonal decorations. It's a bit of a pain in the ass, but what else am I going to do? Reusing decorations is a win across the board; it saves money, time, and it's more sustainable.

One thing I love about reusing decorations is that it has encouraged me to think about what sorts of decorations make the biggest impact while taking up the least space, and my decoration game has actually improved because of it.

Wow, the snarky replies to this comment kind of take me by surprise.

I grew up in a household where we went to the attic for our box of decorations before each festive season. We might add something new here and there, but there was always sentimental value in pulling out the old things, and of course it saved money. And we made new things ourselves, too, like tiny trick-or-treat bags and pillows and costumes out of cheap fabric and it would have just seemed bizarre to me as a kid that you would go buy, like, orange and black novelty metallic garland or something.

Same. When my brother and I moved out we both got a box with "our" ornaments to take with us and I still have them (even though I just have a little Charlie Brown Christmas tree in my tiny apartment lol.

There are snarky replies because the anon who made that comment is offering a solution so obvious and basic that it comes off as pretty condescending.

NAYRT - Anon's advice may be obvious, but the anon they were responding to expressed that they weren't financially able to acquire all their Halloween decorations at once, which suggests they probably are buying quite a few new decorations each year. I am living below the poverty line, and the amount I have to spend on decorations each year is under $20, because I reuse as much as possible. So yeah, anon's advice about reusing decorations is legit.

I'm sure they meant well. But I can't help but wince whenever someone goes, "Oh hey, you're poor, you say? Have you tried, like, I dunno... SAVING MONEY????" Obviously that's legit advice, it just sounds very "the millenials can't afford houses because avocado toast"ish.

Yeah, me too.

My mother is notoriously frugal, and while she often took it too far (eg. reusing tattered, sad-looking garland that was on its twelfth Christmas), I still love all the memories of hauling out the Christmas boxes and all their old holiday treasures.

I'm not well off at all, so I often can't afford to invest in good-quality decorations that are going to hold up for twenty years in a row, but even the cheap stuff can often be reused, and I actually end up liking even the cheap stuff more with each holiday season, because it may be a bit tacky up close, but it's served its purpose well.

Back when Pier One still had brick and mortar stores, shopping the sales right after a holiday used to be one of my favorite things. 80% off all holiday decorations? Yes, please!

...I didn't say a damn thing about decorations tho. I dress up to hand out candy because it makes the kids light up to see it, but eating disorder bullshit means I can't always wear the same costume thanks to fluctuating size.
