What casting and character changes did you dislike, OP?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-17 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the guy who plays Morpheus looks like a budget Edward Cullen (and I heard the actor is apparently friends with Pattinson which is kinda hilarious) and i just hate his look. I think genderflipping Constantine wasn't great in the first place but I wouldn't have minded if they hadn't cast someone with such a major babyface considering how the original Constantine looks pretty rough most of the time. It's like they wanted so badly to be diverse but god forbid any female character isn't young and pretty.

I'm not that bothered about Death but I am side-eying them for banging their drum so much about how they did a "raceblind" casting when all that means is "almost everyone non-white is black" with barely any, for example, Asian people in the cast (and not a single east-Asian person as far as I saw.).

And I'm not a fan of the genderflipped Lucifer but that might've been because of the atrocious styling they gave her.

Also making the Corinthian the big bad... meh. Not a great choice imo.

I think the genderflipped Constantine was to do with them not having the screen rights to the John Constantine character.

ymmv, I ADORE the casting on Morpheus. To me, he even has some resemblance to Gaiman himself, which I find both eerie and interesting. Lucifer to me was...unexpected but it worked? I liked there was a "cheruby" element to it, if that makes sense?

I think the Morpheus actor is about as good as can reasonably be expected. It's a situation where, I just think there's not any actual human beings who could realistically do better. Jenna Colemastine is fine to me but I fundamentally just like Jenna Coleman so w/e. Corinthian casting is great IMO.

And I agree that the styling of the genderflipped Lucifer isn't great but at the same time, I don't see how you can say that and then also say that they're unwilling to cast any female character who isn't young and pretty.

But John Constantine "looks pretty rough" because he aged in real time right up until Vertigo got integrated into DC proper in the comics. When this was written he was actually pretty young and cute. Badly dressed, but cute.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-17 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I hear you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-17 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an interesting topic, OP. I think you're completely valid to simply just want to say that it's purely because you do feel it's not for you. But in the world we live in, opening that can of worms may lead to other fans to start talking about racism in the fandom. And TBH I think that's valid too. And to be clear, if anyone were to start accusing racism just because someone says, "This actor is miscast in this role/I don't like this actor in this role", that's shitty and makes race discussions more difficult to talk about and not IMO a sincere attempt at addressing real issues of racism in fandom/pop culture.
But yeah, I get why you'd rather not say anything. It's not worth having a gripe if it can lead to people having a whole discourse on something you don't want to talk about.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-17 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I can relate. I'm a pretty big comic book geek and Sandman always seemed... just good to me, but nothing lifechanging. I much prefer other creators from the same era - Moore, Morrison, Milligan - and I kinda hate Sandman's reputation as "THE artistic comic book for true discerning intellectuals". Usually it just shows that a person saying that knows jack shit about comics and never bothered to go deeper.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-17 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I just can't take seriously who call comics graphic novels.

Anyway, I think the cast was mostly perfect (I really think Clara Who was miscast, or/and hadn't have good directions) and even though it doesn't have the same impact on me as comics, I think it's a lovely show

....that's what the publishers and the world in general call them. They're not the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-17 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, they need to tell buyers that this comic is not like other comics, it's so mature and serious. Funny how people keep using it for Sandman, work that always had it's DC roots in place. Sandman always was quite nerdy and never a stand alone, it's in a DC universe

It's a valid distinction though, in a similar way as there's a difference between a novel, a short story or a novella.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-17 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it is, but mostly it used for stand alone stories like, I dunno, Maus that have no connection to comics universe. Or if people are ashamed of reading comics. No, I am not reading comics, I read graphic novels. Yeaaaah
Sandman is a comic and it never was ashamed of it

It's been so long since I read Sandman, I honestly can't remember much at all about it, and in particular can't remember much about the individual characters. So I'm good with most of it.

I'm slightly weirded out by the actor playing Dream, though. The features of his face seem really small, and his face/head in general seem really big. His mouth seems *tiny*, and he has these weirdly big cheeks/jaws.... Just kind of odd-looking when you see him 'full frontal', as it were. He's not bad in profile.

Kind of like Dream in the graphic novels.

I was looking at images from the gn, and no - his jaw/chin/cheeks were narrower, an almost pointed face, as opposed to the square face of the actor.

+1

He is a slightly weird-looking dude, playing a character that was incredibly weird-looking in the source material.

They messed with his dimensions a lot...used weird lenses on him at times. I don't think it's the actor so much as what they were doing to make him look elongated. His head often looked larger than his body.

I loved the adaptation but I support you in your dislike of it. Not everything is going to be everybody's delicious cake, and that's okay.

Plus 1 to this.

I watched it because my uncle had us read the graphic novels when we were teenagers - it was his way of bonding with us, but I don't honestly remember a whole lot except that I did like them (it's been a looooooong time!). I was not impressed with the first episode, but I adored every one after that and have no complaints with casting thus far. I'm looking forward to more.

I love it so far and my only disappointment is that I could cosplay show Despair just by wearing sweats, heh.

I thought the actors did a great job, so I'm not fussed what they look like so much. Some of the costuming was kind of meh, though. Was hoping to see Dream's robe with all the sleeping faces made of flame.

The only time I thought Dream looked like his comics self was as his reflection in the water, but Sturridge nailed the part otherwise, perfectly walking the line between dutybound arrogant asshole and sad mopey little man.

Death seemed warmer but less perky than her comic self but still had a great older sister vibe with Dream.

The actor playing Desire did an awesome job and I loved Dream and Desire's dynamic, but even in the comics I never got why their feud went as far as it did; I'm hoping I get a better sense if we get more seasons.

Gwendolyn Christie is an amazing Lucifer, and I loved the Renaissance angel hair, although her outfits seemed like they didn't fit and/or were made of cheap fabric. I heard her fashion designer husband designed them for her, so that was extra baffling. No budget for tailoring, huh?

I do hope we get an Indian or Pakistani Delirium or other major character, just because the comics always felt really British to me so while Black Rose Walker and her family are awesome, I think there's still more diversity to go to match the rl UK. Plus it would piss off more assholes.

And as far as more personal representation goes, more fat people would be nice.

took me an embarrasingly long time to realize that this sandman is Neil Gaimans Sandman and not E.T.A Hoffmanns.
Damn.
