Emotionally devastating but fitting endings

(Anonymous) 2022-08-20 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a fan of happy endings or a good open ending, so I don't usually go for sad or dark endings. Every once in a while, however, there is a sad ending that works so well that I appreciate it even though it hurts me.

What has a crushing ending that is so right for the story/characters that you're okay with the desolation it brings?

For me, there's Quantum Leap (poor, poor Sam) and An American Werewolf in London (oh, David).

It's not explicitly desolation, but omg the ending to Inception is a gut punch.

Yeah, agreed. Also, I will put forward another Nolan movie, Memento, as a movie with a perfect but deeply disturbing ending. Both of these endings play on such similar themes; they're basically siblings.

NAYRT - also agreed. I was about to comment Memento.

The Talented Mr Ripley (movie). It's one of my favorite endings, but also so disturbing and sad that it deters me from rewatching the movie very often.

The ending of It Follows was spot on and I unwittingly demonstrated how spot on it was by saying "Oh my god, behind you!" at the screen literally half a second before the screen went to credits. And then I just sat there, realizing I'd just exhibited the exact reaction the movie wanted me to, at the exact moment it wanted me to exhibit it, and I was like, touche, movie. Touche.

There's also a little indie Canadian apocalypse movie called Last Night that I felt had a really perfect ending. But I only saw the movie once like thirteen years ago, so it's possible I wouldn't like it as much now.

Now I definitely need to re-watch The Talented Mr. Ripley. People keep mentioning it and I realize it’s been ages and I don’t remember it that well.

Yeah, +1 on The Talented Mr Ripley movie and I second the recommendation as well.

Train to Busan. I know 'kill everyone' is such a gold standard especially in Korean horror, but it fit to break that a little in this one.

One reason I go so hard for Vagrant Story is because after beating it the first time, I started a new game, and then proceeded to run up the clock to 99:99 because I wasn't sure I wanted to put myself through the ending again. It's perfect, but brutal.

Also in video games, gotta point out Shadow of the Colossus.

And I think movie-wise, Terminator 3 counts? I get why some folks might not have agreed with how things went down there, but personally I thought it... I don't know how to describe it. It had weight that an unambiguous "we saved the world again!" ending wouldn't have.

blackadder goes forth is probably the champion here

i'd say a word for ashes to ashes, which is as good an ending several characters could get but absolutely no ending for gene hunt, and somehow that's perfect for him

Oh man, I'll never be over Blackadder Goes Forth, it really was perfect.

Your mileage may vary, but Harold and Maude hit me hard (in an ultimately good way).

DK Broster's The Flight of the Heron. Whether you were expecting the person who died at the end to die, or his best friend and honourable enemy, it's a gut punch either way. But also either way, it's fitting for the story. The setting is also very fitting: quite possibly the most beautiful spot on the Scottish coast.
