The worst part is that even people who didn't mean to , who I know love me and mean well also contributed sometimes and being treated like a child is a part of what made life so hard after I left school. For 7 years after high school, while dealing with some degree of trauma from high school bullying (yeah I know it sounds kinda.. dramatic but I remember having flashbacks where I curled up crying and saying I should have killed myself in high school. I was 24) I also dealt with being treated like I was still a child mentally (see why i'm very... bothered by the use of 'mental age' terminology.) and told I was probably still 17 mentally.

And I wondered for a while if it was true.

I'm not saying this to demonize my folks I love them and they did ... I like to believe, the best they could. But.. misinformation about autism is everywhere. and misinformation HURTS. (I've also come to realize that my therapist at the the time I graduated was ... just HELLA toxic and constantly set my mom and I against each other)

sorry for this ramble I just.. AGH so many feelings. It's no use trying to explain this to antis ofc because they don't listen. they talk over anyone who tells them what they don't want to hear and then they demonize them. That's been my experience and I've known them both online and irl. Believe me when I say that a very... verbally violent and all or nothing anti in real life is a terrifying person to know. I'm so glad I left NC with like three or four states between us.

Which is one reason why I am currently writing a smutty fic with great gusto about a character that apparently a lot of the fandom headcanons as autistic and/or child-coded. Screw that crap.

It is Peridot. One of the artists said it on social media, along with saying that was the reason she never fuses. It was controversial for a bunch of reasons: Rebecca Sugar herself didn't say anything about it; other staff members had spoken before about shipping her with other characters (mainly Lapis and Amethyst, and that was a whole shipwar that got dragged back up); the implication that fusion is indicative of sex/romance when that's always been a hated misconception that is obviously refuted in canon by like, Steven fusing with anyone. But she gets brought up on lists of canon aro and/or ace characters now, and in pop articles about the rise or ace representation, sometimes even those articles talk about how people disrespect the rep by shipping her.

As a fellow aroace person who is ride-or-die for my OTPs, I can empathize with you on this. Personally I would probably just keep on shipping, and ignore the haters, but I understand that sometimes you can't help but let it get under your skin.

On a totally separate note, how the heck have you managed to be in numerous fandoms with aroace characters?? I can't even name numerous aroace characters. I can name...four ace characters all together, and I'm pretty sure only one of them is aro too, though I can't be sure about that.

It's a culmination of a couple of them being popular...ish things where the aro/ace character was confirmed in a side note somewhere outside of canon proper, some webcomics that have small fandoms, and some books that have even smaller fandoms. I'm afraid I'd give away my anonymity if I said what they were, they're so small. Yeah, there's still not a lot of it in canon for popular things.

Keep on shipping your ships, OP! Shipping isn't activism. Shipping doesn't increase or decrease representation. It doesn't matter if you ship the character with one person, three people, or write them having nightly orgies with half a city, they'll still be right there in the canon being aroace.
