you're free to dislike whatever, but if you feel the need to wade into conversations about (harmless, fictional) stuff you dislike and announce how much you dislike it....maybe you're closer to being an anti than you think

Everyone online who's used the words "sexualizes minors" when talking about fic turned out to be an anti. If someone says it in those words, they never stop at not liking the fic. They accuse people do as little as don't hate it of being pedophiles and usually more. So tough break OP, but if you use anti dogwhistles I'm going to call you an anti. If you're really not one, try saying "I don't like underage."

Yep. It comes down to personal preference of the reader ("welp, not my thing!") vs sweeping moral judgement on the writer ("your writing DOES this thing, so it's bad"). It can seem like a small difference in the grand scheme, but it really does help indicate intent.

Here's the thing. You can not like whatever you want but still believe that other people have the right to like that thing without being hassled and harassed about it.

Like, me? I'm really, really not into parent/child incest in fic and that's fine. But I recognize that other people are into that so if they want to read or write it, they should be able to do that. I'm also not going to come into a space where other people are discussing it and go "EWW THAT'S DISGUSTING," I'm just going to stay out of that space because they've got the right to have their fun the same way I have the right to enjoy the kinks that I'm into.

If you just don’t like reading something and you say that or something similar where it is warranted (in your own spaces, stating your preferences for a request fic, places where opinions are expected or sought, etc.) – not an anti.

If you are stridently, vehemently, and/or repeatedly proclaiming your dislike for something in a place where there are fans of that something – could be a jackass or could be an anti. If your goal is just to make sure others know and should never associate you with such things – jackass. If your goal is to discourage or shame others for their fictional preferences – anti.

If you believe these things shouldn’t exist or others shouldn’t enjoy them – anti.

Putting aside the issue of whether you are an anti or not, I do get what you mean about the stark difference between RL attitudes towards content and fandom attitudes. Almost everyone I know IRL who isn't in fandom would qualify as at least a semi-anti if they were in fandom. My friends are nice, intelligent, and very liberal people, but they would all be at least semi-antis. Pretty sure they wouldn't harass people, but I know from conversations we've had that they think it's weird and messed up to have certain dark kinks.

I take the YKINMKATIOK approach, myself, but I've long found it kind of exasperating the way people in fandom seem determined to believe that only bullys, bigots, and idiots could ever apply real-world ethics to fictional sexual fantasies. It's wild to me, because my personal experience has been rather the opposite. *shrugs*
