Why?

OP
I don't like the vibe as compared to LJ/DW/tumblr (or even twitter) fandom. It's like it looks like a place I should feel at home but is subtly different in enough ways that I feel like I'm in a mirror verse.

I get that feeling. I have one fandom where I'm a member of a Discord server that is full of chill, fun people; and while it's tiny on Tumblr most of the people there seem to be fine and having fun; and then I am also on the subreddit and ... it gets kinda bro-y at times, for lack of a better word.

I feel like most people who do fandom on Reddit *only* do fandom on Reddit. Like a guy who crafts a 9 part GOT theory about how the story will end but has never heard of AO3 or folks who post "their" paintings of characters without realizing that picture got tons of attention on another site.

It's odd but I don't have the why nailed down just yet.

Reddit used to scare me. But I've discovered it really isn't all dudebros. There is some awesome stuff on there. You just have to know which subreddits are fun and which to avoid like the plague.

Lots of the animal themed subs for example (not r/aww because that's a main sub) just cute photos of whatever pet or animal you like best, often with some pretty good advice for keeping specific pets from people who aren't going to talk to you about anything other than raising that animal.

Generally I find that the subs where there's a skew towards women as the main base are better (not always, but generally)...but the double edged sword is that once they get more popular and therefore more visible men just CAN'T help themselves unfortunately.

It's really shit that I had to leave the sub for my favourite sport (that happens to be male dominated) after years of no issues because one guy obviously clocked I was a woman from my posting history and got really abusive about my opinions and of course the mods did nothing.

Animal ones are good. I've found a few other ones that are good (idiotsincars is really great).

Same!
I've always thought it's annoying about fandoms, but one of my fandoms is frankly only alive at reddit, and this subreddit is fun

Reddit isn't the primary place I fandom (but I do fandom there), but I can see why people like to do it there. Its vaguely reminiscent of a forum where someone makes a post and then people discuss in the comments and have actual conversations. Thats something you don't really get on places like Tumblr.

NGL I miss forum style fandoming/perusing the internet. I've never wanted to navigate through reddit out of sheer laziness/lack of curiosity, but I've sort of considered joining reddit in recent months.

This is the reason I like it, too. Easier to actually have an indepth, easily trackable conversation about something.

I just got an account recently because I've been visiting various fandoms there as a lurker for quite some time now. Sometimes there's more active fandoms there and other times I like the fandom there more than my usual places to go (I use to enjoy the fandom side of Deviantart but since the Eclipse update the majority of the fandom groups I had followed had died, and although it can be great for art - the fandoms in Tumblr spaces can either be intimidating or just too young for me).

I find it depends on the fandom. LOTR, GOT/ASOIAF and Star Wars fandoms are absolutely fucking unbearable on Reddit, because they're made up of the worst kind of incel mainsplainers. But smaller communities of mainly non-cis-men tend to be a lot chill and pleasanter. His Dark Materials fandom is great there, as is Labyrinth. Dragon Age is pretty good too, but then that's always been a progressive series.

Twitter is digshit for literally everything.
