I don't remember how long Frasier was on, but I watched it from episode 1, and I really loved it, and then after a couple of years (as I recall) I had to stop watching because the cringe comedy got so bad, I was squirming with embarrassment every week for Frasier. So I say no, it wasn't always that excruciatingly bad, but it got there!

I need to rewatch Frasier. Will get back to you, OP.

Yes.

It's just your perspective was different then - that's not a knock, that's just how it is. It debuted almost thirty years ago, US society was in a different place, and you were in a different life stage.

Taste and norms shift, so its bound to happen that things didn't age well.

I loved a good number of shows that likely I won't be able to watch anymore now XD

That's why I try to avoid any show/movie that falls into my "Nostalgia" category. I know I'm setting myself up for disappointment if I watch them.

It's weird, I started out liking it, partway through the first run started having the same problem... but now I can actually rewatch the whole thing without issue.

Well, except certain episodes where the cringefail was of a variety that would have been actually devastating if they happened to someone in the real world, instead of just kind of embarrassing. Particularly as the cringefail was normally caused by people just being too egotistical to be honest with each other. I do not enjoy seeing situations that would actually hurt people because someone couldn't just suck it up and apologize/be honest. :P

I thought the show using Jane Leeves' pregnancy as an excuse to make the tackiest fat jokes possible was really cringey and I won't watch those eps but other than that I really liked the show except for the Lilith-is-evil comments. I rather liked Lilith and anyway one reason she and Frasier got divorced was he cheated on her so he was no saint.

I did like how the whole thing with Daphne's weight did lead to the storyline of Niles having to adjust to getting away from his idealized image of her, and how both his inability to see her struggles and her eating issues tapped into some respective insecurities about themselves and their burgeoning relationship with each other that they had to work through. I thought that was an interesting way to handle that.

I agree the jokes were tacky, though. At the same time, they also kind of fit, because Martin and Frasier often joked about Maris' weight, and Martin in general has always been pretty blunt with his comments about people's looks, so tacky as it was, it was also in character. Not that that makes it any better, mind, just an observation.

Frasier was considered intellectual, highbrow comedy for network television back in those days!
