This clothes are so awful they just invites wank. What is this texture even.
Anyway, only you yourself stop from wearing clothes you want. Maybe not every day, but it's easily adapted to modern clothes. You need money or sewing skills, but

Her dress looks like cheap bordello curtains. :( Don't get me wrong, I love beautiful period clothing... but that isn't the best example, IMO.

AYRT
YES
It's not even remotely historical, but whatever, but this material and just one flat color makes this costume look like a dressing gown

I feel that way about ren faire garb and kimono. Both of those things just make everyone look great, regardless of body shape or size.

Or maybe I have a non-sexual fetish or something, I dunno.

I disagree on kimono - if you have big hips or (to a lesser extent) a big bust, the body wrapping you need to do to keep the cylindrical shape is very unflattering. Men's style with a hakama still works though.

Hmm, I dunno, I think the wrapping to keep it cylindrical is one reason it seems flattering on everyone to me - it sort of evens (literally?) the playing field. Though I bet the wrapping is far more uncomfortable with big hips/bust. Definitely one of those things that makes me pleased to be built like a stick.

Will never say no to hakama though. :D (Unless I have to sew them myself. AAAAAUUUUGH. Then again, the end result is so cool I ... so far have not said no. :D)

(Anonymous) 2022-09-08 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I am very hourglass in shape, so the wrapping got actually painful.

Do what you like if you can afford it and don't mind all the buttons, etc. Will you be wearing proper undergarments of the era beneath them?
Although I think you'd get a better reaction if your occupation is an artistic one. Because if you work at Wendy's...

I feel ya. I wish I could wear my velvet frock coat, leggings and tall boots ALL THE TIME. I also love a sweeping, multi-layered skirt and a gorgeous little jacket. I DO like hats, though I can't do my hair to save my life, so no hats for me (unless they work with hair being down).

I would wear it if I had it, and have - my sis in law made it a practice, years ago, to go to the grocery in our quasi-Ren Faire dresses and whatnot, for the fuck of it. It was fun as hell!

Some of them on some people.

Some of them just look uncomfortable, especially the little boys' suits. And I really don't think the women's hats flatter at all.

I feel, you OP. I wish I could wear fantasy clothes. Well, fantasy men's clothes. Boots and capes.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-07 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The ONLY reason Victorian fashion is "flattering" is the underpinnings. Take it from a maker whose partner is a wearer. You'd best be wearing a corset and bustle or nothing will even fit you, let alone flatter you. OTOH at least Victorian corsets, properly made, are not uncomfortable - which is why you see them heavily used in steampunk and other aesthetics. Those coats are tailored with extra fine-line seams meant to fit over a corset, so without one, the only people it would look good on are people who are natuarally hourglass-waisted with a small bust and precisely-sized hips. Take away all the seaming and you have a men's square boxy blazer.

I love corsets. Someday when I have the money I'm going to buy a real professional one. Right now I only have some store-bought ones, but even those I love how I feel in them. When I'm in the mood to feel sexy, that's what I wear.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-08 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I highly recommend any corset-focused makers in your area or region, if only because if you need any custom work, someone near you would have an easier time getting it done vs someone clear across the country. In the upper midwest I highly rec Scoundrelle's Keep but they serve a small region of Minnesota, Iowa, and nearby states. I also rec chatting up whoever does the con circuit (scifi more than anime) AND RenFaire circuit nearest you, because that's the person/shop who, if they can't do custom, will know who will give you the most bang for your buck and will happily send you to them.

We bought some excellent pieces from a UK maker during the pandemic but their bust-to-waist ratio was off, so they were far too large in the bust even for my ample partner. I had to take them all in. It's much easier in the long run to get someone who can work with you from the get-go, and do it locally or local-ish. Less shipping hassle that way.

Personally, I'd much rather have clothes that fit due to attainable underpinnings than clothes that only fit if your body shape is Right.

honestly same; building pretty things for the other half is fun but I personally attend the same events in Japanese historical because yukata and hakama (not even court wear or armor) are so fucking comfy and I don't have to do any underpinnings at all.

which is why I get where OP is coming from but they also don't really understand that the reason anything looks so good is because of the unattainable underpinnings in the first place. with anything historical, fantasy, etc, having a background grasp of what goes into the clothing looking so good on the body helps decide what you really want out of clothing. that goes for past, present, and future, really.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-07 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people do. I kind of have to admire them. I follow historical costumers who make their own clothes and wear them 24/7, and they just seem to be out there living their best lives.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-07 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
If historical accuracy isn't the point for you, why not wear 1890s-inspired clothing? I'm sure silky shirts with lots of buttons and moderate leg-o-mutton sleeves, ankle boots and long, bell-shaped skirts are still around.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-08 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I saw this as 1980s for a sec and thought this was Prince. I need glasses.

XD

(Anonymous) 2022-09-08 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I really feel this. Although I wear my own takes on 1760-1890s fashion. Minus the wild decolletage some of the women's fashion had -- I tend to do takes on men's wear. It really depends, and it's always more of an approximation with a mix of what second hand stuff I can get my hands on. If I had time and skill, I'd learn how to make things myself.

Come to think of it, it's been a long while since I've dressed in a fun way, just for myself. It always felt good, and fun. Thanks for the secret, OP. I'm going to dress up soon :)

OP I feel you. Whenever I can, I like to buy "modern hanfu", which is just hanfu adapted to modern blouses, dresses and skirts. It scratches my itch, they are simple to wear, and the embroidery on the sashes and lining are always so beautiful to look at.
